D7 Fall Conference in November 2009, See What's New for more information. The Pittsburgh Power Squadron is a unit of the United States Power Squadrons®. The Pittsburgh Power Squadron became a charter member of USPS in 1939. We are in District 7 which is made up of 13 squadrons and covers the geographical area between Vermilion, OH, Pittsburgh, PA and northern W. Virginia. The Pittsburgh Power Squadron offers Safe Boating Classes to the public which run for 5 to 8 weeks. These classes teach navigational aids, the rules of the road, how to anchor, different kinds of anchors, basic piloting, knots, docking, and basic seamanship. The instruction is free, although there is a nominal fee for the Student Manual and charting materials. Several additional classes are available to members including Seamanship, Piloting, Advanced Piloting, Weather, Marine Electronics, Cruise Planning, Sail, Engine Maintenance, Instructor Qualification, and Navigation. Education and Boating Courses In Pennsylvania Waters, anyone born after Jan. 1, 1982 must obtain a Boating Safety Education Certificate before operating a motorboat of more than 25 HP. Passing our America's Boating Course meets this requirements.
