United States Power Squadrons®

The United States Power Squadrons®, established in 1914, is the world's largest private, non-profit boating safety educational organization. The National Headquarters is located in Raleigh, North Carolina. It is not affiliated with any governmental or military organization.  It is dedicated to the education, safety, and enjoyment of all boaters. It is divided into 33 Districts across the U.S. and it's Territories.  The 33 Districts are further divided into 450 squadrons.

This is a volunteer organization, where people from all walks of life can share their talents for the education, safety, and enjoyment of all boaters. There are many National Committees, including education, finance, computer technology, and more.  A natural progression for Squadron members is to advance to the District and National levels, if they desire. It is at these levels that they can offer their services to keep the USPS Organization on the cutting edge of boating education and safety.

The Ensign is the official bimonthly magazine of the United States Power Squadrons. All registered members receive this as part of their annual registration dues. Each copy has many section that provide information about various National, District, and Squadron activities, members boating trips, boat maintenance tips, boat electronics, the new US Coast Guard Rescue 21 and MMSI programs, safety related items, articles from a maritime lawyer about many boating related incidents etc, boating book reviews, boat sales, boat related equipment and apparel sales, boat insurance, Real Estate rental and sale, identify a location contest, cartoons, and a lot more. You may even be able to have a picture of your boats transom, with its name, printed for all USPS members to see. If you like to write short articles about boating related subjects, you may be able to have them published here. Click on the Ensign to see how to have your boating articles published, or how to place an advertisement in the magazine.

USPS District 8

USPS District 8 consists of 15 Squadrons along the South East Coast of Florida that extend from Key West, north along the Atlantic Coast to Sebastian Inlet and Vero Beach, Florida. The Pompano Beach Sail & Power Squadron is a member of USPS District 8. It is located in the center of the district.

Squadron members that have advanced to the District level, can assist all the squadrons in their district, to implement the various programs that National has created or updated, and assist in many other ways.

District 8 has a weekend Spring and Fall Conference at a hotel in our general area. There are many departmental seminars that District and Squadron members can attend, to learn more about  their organization and its benefits. There is a Party on Friday Night, and a Saturday Night Banquet. You can register as a guest for the two day Conference, or just attend the seminars you are interested in.

Pompano Beach Sail & Power Squadron

Our Squadron boating area is located right in the middle of District 8, half way between Key West and Vero Beach, Fl. Our main objective is to provide boating education for both sail and power boaters. We invite you to attend our America's Boating Course.  Click here to view and/or register for America's Boating Course. Check our Member's Benefits  page for the many benefits available to squadron members. Upon satisfactory completion of the boating course, we cordially solicit your membership in our organization. Come and join us in our special boating fraternity. Learn how to use and maintain your boat properly, safely, legally, and enjoy yourself while doing it.

The official monthly magazine of the Pompano Beach Sail & Power Squadron is the Mariner
. This is an Award winning publication of the Pompano Beach Sail & Power Squadron. All squadron members receive this as part of their yearly registration fee. It has information and articles related to our Squadron, District 8, and National. You can also place boating and non boating business related advertisements in it. Just like the Ensign magazine at the National level, you can submit written articles to be published in it.

Do you know what the buoy's and day markers are telling you?  How the type and placement of the many buoy's and day markers are determined? Have you ever wondered how boating charts are created? How the depth's are determined? Join our squadron and participate in Co-op Charting to find out how you could contribute to this process. This is just one of the many ways, you can support the PBPS Squadron in providing boating education and safety for all boaters. To learn more about our squadron, click here  Who We Are or in the top Navigation Bar.

The Vessel Safety Check program is a free service performed by the United States Power Squadrons, USCG, USCG Auxiliary, and the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators. The USPS has specially trained Examiners that are available to perform this courtesy safety examination of recreational boats, to verify they meet Federal, State, and local requirements. They also check for various other safety related conditions. Owners of boats that meet these requirements will receive the VSC Decal, shown on the Vessel Safety Check page. This decal indicates that their boat was examined and passed. If a boat does not meet all of the requirements, the owner will be provided with a list of what needs to be done to bring the boat up to the legal requirements. He/she can contact the examiner for a re-exam, after the item/s have been corrected. We do not give a ticket if a boat does not meet the legal requirements. The main objective of USPS is to provide boating safety education for all boaters. This is just one of the many ways we can provide this education and safety for all boaters, their families, and guests while on board. VSC check should be performed every year as Federal, State, and local requirements can change, your boats safety equipment can become defective, and/or out of date. A new, different color decal, with the current year on it, will be provided as a replacement for the previous years decal upon meeting the Federal, State, and local requirements.

The various law enforcement officers, in their patrol boats (who have the authority to give tickets)  may decide not to check your boat if you have a current and properly displayed VSC Decal. The free VSC exam is a lot less expensive, than a ticket from a law enforcement officer. After all, the money that a  ticket would cost you could be better spent on purchasing fuel, so you can enjoy your boat more.

Now for the fun part.
