NEW - The new 12 week, open book exam is in.. Junior Navigator is our transition to offshore navigation. We’ve taken a new approach and significantly shortened the course without sacrificing key material. The concept is parallel to P and AP – we navigate using GPS as our primary position sensor. When we go offshore, we can no longer use landmarks and navigation aids as our  means of checking and backup, so… We use the sun. This course thoroughly explains the use of celestial navigation, but uses the sun – available all day. Single sights check the GPS, running fixes provide backup and an alternative means of navigation.

Junior Navigation begins the study of offshore (open-ocean) navigation -- integrated electronic positioning systems, sight taking with a mariner's sextant on the sun, moon, planets, and stars, how to reduce sights using the nautical almanac to determine position, and passage planning with special open-ocean charts.
