This course covers the requirements for award of the VSC decal and additional equipment recommended to be carried aboard recreational boats. The students will be instructed in the Recreational Boating Safety program to minimize the loss of life, personal injury, property damage and environmental impact associated with the use of recreational boats, through preventive means, in order to maximize safe use and enjoyment of U.S. waterways by the public. Vessel examiners will educate boaters through direct, face-to-face boating safety information exchanges.

The Vessel Safety Check is intended to serve as a "prevention through education, outreach and volunteer compliance" activity and to help recreational boaters gain a respect for the boating environment as a result of the Vessel Safety Check.

The Squadron Vessel Examiner Program  ( Prerequisites: Squadron Member )
  • The VSC offers a one-on-one educational opportunity for the boater.
  • You, as an official certified examiner, have the opportunity and the responsibility to share your knowledge with the
boater about the benefits of safety equipment and how to use that equipment properly, and communicate
opportunities to attend boating safety classes in your area offered by your squadron and other organizations with similar missions.
  • You can also share "local knowledge" relative to the area where the safety check is conducted.
  • Your inspection provides an opportunity to educate the boater and an opportunity to recruit new members.
  • An important fact once you are a qualified Vessel Examiner is that ' You have taken the time to gain this expertise and are providing the boater - and their families and guests - with a valuable and potentially life-saving service.'
