The Potomac River Power Squadron is proud of its educational program. We realize that boating education keeps us prepared and knowledgeable so we can do things on the water safely, correctly and efficiently. It keeps us up to date on current regulations and technology. It gives us knowledge to share with others so that we can help fellow boaters navigate and operate their vessels safely.

Our 7-week public Boating Courses are generally offered beginning in September, January, March and April. Our shorter public BoatSmart course is usually offered on a Saturday, both in various months as demand dictates.  These courses are taught in area schools and community centers. Consult our latest listing available in this web site or on the United States Power Squadrons (USPS) public web page for times and locations. We also list courses on the BoatU.S. Foundation Courseline Online. Your can reach them toll-free at 1-800-336-2628 (or 1-800-245-2628 in Virginia).

Our member courses of Advanced Grades and Electives are cycled to permit gradual advancement toward the achievement of a full certificate (successful completion of all USPS courses).  Seamanship, Advanced Piloting, and an Elective course are usually offered every Fall, beginning in September. Piloting and an Elective course are normally offered every Spring.  Our classes are usually small and intimate, with excellent "student to faculty" ratios.  Our teachers are all dedicated volunteers, and many, as Chapman award nominees, have been recognized by the District for their excellence in teaching. USPS members interested in attending our courses are encouraged to check our latest member course schedule also on our Web page.

Please see the Public Boating Classes page on this web site for our current boating classes.
