THINGS TO THINK ABOUT

The mission of the Executive Officer’s Department is outreach: involving as many members as we can in teaching, certifying, ensuring, and practicing safe boating.

We arrange interesting programs at our meetings covering a variety of topics from boat maintenance to cruise experiences. Our speakers hail from a number of partner organizations, non-profits, and commercial firms with the same interest as our organization: safe and enjoyable recreational boating.

We conduct vessel safety checks for the boating public upon request. We have a team of certified members conducting them. With the need to keep up with an ever-growing demand for these public services and to expand our presence in an even larger market, we always need more members to help us in this important work.

Each year, our organization saves the Federal government a significant number of man-hours in the verification of its more than 750,000 geodetic survey bench marks managed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). We also gage tidal current at selected locations and verify the locations and conditions of a variety of aids to navigation appearing in the wide variety of charts and publications of NOAA. Obviously, the more members we can involve in those activities, the greater our geographical coverage can be.

We maintain a Squadron Safety Committee responsible for educating members via newsletter articles and raising public awareness of safety issues related to recreational boating. We also maintain liaison with regulatory bodies, keeping our members informed of new rules and regulations affecting boaters.

If any of these jobs interest you, I urge you to seriously consider becoming a Potomac River Power Squadron member and working on one of our committees. It’s a lot of fun, and we could sure use your help in the vital services we perform for the boating public. Please direct any questions concerning membership to our Membership chair at the membership link you will find elsewhere on this website.  Thanks!
