8-Week Safe Boating Course
This informative eight-week course covers topics in:
Seamanship and Safety
Small Boat Handling
Government Regulations
Marine Compass and Charts
Rules of the Road
Aids to Navigation
Boat Trailering
Manners and Customs
and much more
This informative course runs for 8 weeks, one night per week. You can register for the course the first scheduled evening of class beginning at 6:30 p.m.The first six weeks are instruction sessions. The seventh week covers Personal Water Craft (PWC) operation and review. The eighth week is the exam. The cost of the course materials is $35.00 payable the first night. There is no charge for instruction. Locations shown below with an asterisk (*) charge a small fee for the use of the facilities. Participants must be 18 years of age or older unless accompanied by an adult.

This course is for power boaters, sail boaters
and personal water craft users . If you cruise, fish water-ski,
or just go joy-riding, this course is for you. Completion of the
course will also satisfy New York State laws pertaining to Mandatory
PWC Education Requirements for all ages. It will allow young boaters
under 18 years of age to operate a boat without adult supervision.
Those who successfully complete this eight-week course are generally
eligible for a 10-15 percent discount on their water craft insurance
policy. Passing the examination will also qualify you for membership
in the United States Power Squadrons, and the opportunity to take
more advanced courses.

4-Week Boat Smart Course
Become a better and safer boater by taking
our 5-hour Boat Smart course.
It continues for 4 weeks, one night per week. This course covers:
How to safely operate your vessel, basic Rules of the Road, Aids
to Navigation and much more. The course also meets NYS education
requirements for legally operating a Personal Water Craft (PWC).
There is no charge for instruction. Locations shown below with
an asterisk (*) charge a small fee for the use of the facilities.
Please note that participants must be 18 years of age or older unless accompanied by an adult. Successful completion of any of these courses will satisfy New York State law pertaining to mandatory Personal Watercraft Education Requirements for all ages, and allow boaters younger than 18 years of age to operate a boat without adult supervision.

Young Boaters Safety Course
The Rochester Power Squadron offers a young boater's course designed especially for kids 10-17 years old. Presently New York State law does not allow persons under the age of 17 to operate a powerboat alone without having successfully completing a state certified safe boating course.
This NYS certified course covers the safe operation of all types of boats including personal watercraft (jet skies). In addition the course also covers boating laws, navigation rules, safety equipment, how to handle water emergencies and other related topics.
Upon attending all class sessions, completing the workbook and passing the NYS proctored exam; the student will be issued a Boating safety certificate certifying them to operate a powerboat alone. There is no cost for course materials or instruction.
