2009 May Family Night

Up, Up and Away

Lt/C Christopher E. Payne, AP  Administrative Officer

They say timing is everything and if you missed the last family night held Tuesday 04 May, you missed your chance to learn about weather and its effect on Eastern NC past and future.  Our speaker was Mr. Jeff Orrock Warning Coordination Meteorologist for NOAA’s National Weather Service Raleigh Forecast Office.

You may have noticed I mentioned timing is everything and May 4th.  For those of you that can remember the next day 05 May, you probably remember the tornado that touched down in Wilson and Rocky Mount.  I can just about bet that those who attended the meeting used some of their newly found knowledge to track the storm as it moved through the area.  I know I did.

Jeff did a fanatic job showing us past weather patterns that have hit the areas over the years and explaining how things are changing in forecasting all types of weather from northeasters to hurricanes and how we can use the technology on our boats.

Before dinner P/C Kendall Cranston called and giving us an update on his travels to date.  He told us he ran into some rough weather north of Hampton VA and had anchored for the night and was watching the storm clouds all around him.  Jeff having the latest in mobile technology brought up the weather radar in the area where they were and we were able to see what they were experiencing live.

In closing, Jeff recommended that all of us purchase a weather alert radio.   He indicated that Walgreen has one of the best deals going for around $30.00 dollars. Given the changing weather we have had lately, this recommendation may just save your life or the life of your loved ones.
