2005 - COMMANDER'S MESSAGE
PHILLIP A. BENSON, P
It's
all about having fun!
Under the leadership of P/C Christopher E. Payne, S,
the past year has been an outstanding year of boating fellowship,
education and public service.
RMPS conducted an outstanding educational program,
with members completing classes in Seamanship, Piloting, Sail, Operations
Training, and Instructor Development. In addition to the spring and fall
boating classes, we offered Chart Smart and GPS Seminars for the first
time.
In the public service category, Chris was the leader
in performing Vessel Safety Checks. The squadron had a record number of
participants in Coop Charting activities, including both Nautical and
Geodetic submissions. Other activities included "The Dismal Swamp
Cruise", a Luau, and a trip to Holden Beach. We had educational and
entertaining family nights. |
Why were all these things successful? They were successful
because of the people that gave their time and talents to make them happen. Each
person involved had fun doing it. They are people that enjoy using their skills
and talents. It must be fun sharing these skills and talents, else why would
they? After all it is a volunteer organization!
The reason I belong to the Rocky Mount Power Squadron is
because of the people. During the time Sally, Betsy, and I took the boating
course, we had the opportunity to meet several members and discuss their
experiences beyond what was being taught in the class. One has to wonder,
"Why are they here?" Maybe it was a sense of duty or obligation that
brought them there, but I don't think so. You could tell that they liked sharing
their knowledge. They were having fun.
As
I assume the role of being your thirty-fourth commander, I am asking all of you
to have more fun. The way to get more out of the Power Squadron is to put more
into it. Please put into it the things you enjoy doing with what time you can
spare. The new bridge is a wonderful mixture of talent and a terrific group of
people that will have more fun than ever imagined. It is a privilege to have
such a group with which to work.Safe
Boating!
