How does a member become a VE
James Mason, Phone: 216.226.8066
Jim Mason is the
VSC Chairman for the squadron. This is the time of
year to let Jim know you are interested. Classes need
to be scheduled and books need to be ordered. Classes
are generally scheduled for early May.
The training for a VE is in two
parts:
First, a 2 – 3 day class
teaches you the basics on what to look for, documentation
and how to perform the examination.
Second, there is the hands on
portion, which requires a new VE to perform 5 VSC’s with a
another qualified VE. This portion not only builds
confidence, but also allows a qualified VE to help fine tune
the process for the trainee.
How much Commitment is required
As
much as you would like. A few of our VE’s perform
inspections at their own marina for their friends and end up
doing only 10 – 15 VSC’s. Other members like to get
out and meet other boaters, talk and have fun and end up
doing a few more. There is no minimum number required
each year. A couple VE’s only do 2 – 3 each year.
Whatever your schedule permits. However, if you can do
a minimum of 10 VSC’s, you can earn a Merit Mark. We
have a few members that earn a Merit Mark every year by
doing nothing else but 10 VSC’s.
