The History of the Rogers City Sail & Power Squadron

The first official meeting to organize a Provisional Squadron for Rogers City was held on April 15, 2000. Seven persons with an interest in boating and boating safety attended this meeting which was held at the Rogers City Elementary School, Rogers City, Michigan. P/C James J. Bingle, P; P/C Richard Lappin, JN; and P/C Charles F.

RCSPS Burgee
Mosier, Jr. AP were appointed to be the core of this Provisional Squadron. These three Power Squadron Members would then be the driving force to develop this into a Chartered Squadron.

As part of this organizational process, an invitation to attend a social gathering was extended to many boaters in the Rogers City and Presque Isle Michigan area. This opened up the door as to who we were and what our primary purpose was. Within a three year period, we were expected to have enrolled a minimum of 25 members. Within the following year our goal was met with 26 members enrolled in our Provisional Squadron by July 23, 2001. All paperwork was then filled out for National Headquarters to petition the Governing Board of the United States Power Squadron to adopt the squadron name, adopt Bylaws and elect officers. Following this petition, election of officers took place for a Commander, Educational Officer, Executive Officer, Administrative Officer, Secretary and Treasurer.

On May 22, 2002 official paperwork was received from National Headquarters that we were an official CHARTERED SQUADRON. On July 2, 2002 a Charter Event was held at the Water's Edge Restaurant to accept our official plaque from our District 9 Commander. The primary purpose of this Squadron is to educate the public on safe boating, abide by the bylaws and high standards of navigation and seamanship, and to continue to add prestige, honor and respect to the United States Power Squadrons.
