Sandusky Power Squadron is one of over 450 squadrons around the country that make up the United States Power Squadrons (USPS), the world's largest non-profit boating safety education organization. The national organization which was founded in 1914, has about 60,000 members. The Sandusky Squadron, founded in 1937, has about 250 members is made up of almost equal sized groups of sailors, power boaters, trailer boaters and people interested in boating that do not have a boat. We have members who boat on the Great Lakes and members who have taken their boats across the ocean.
Our activities fall into three groups: education, civic service and social. The social part includes such events as our summer rendezvous where we all boat to a location and have a weekend party. Civic services include our Vessel Safety Check Program, being part of the National Safe Boating Campaign, as well as the NOAA chart updating program and teaching an excellent boating course to 100 or so local boaters each year. For our members there are dozens of courses available covering every aspect of boating from basic piloting and seamanship all the way to celestial navigation. Other courses cover weather, various marine electronics and maintenance .
We are a volunteer organization doing all this for fun and satisfaction. No member gets paid for services. We are not affiliated with any part of the government, though we do cooperate with the Coast Guard Auxiliary through education.
