The USPSŪ Boat SmartŪ Course

The Boat Smart Class is a shortened version of the Basic Boating Course.  Boat Smart is a six hour class designed to be useful for all boaters, from the person operating a personal watercraft to the hunter or fisherman in an outboard to the skipper in a family cruiser to the sailing enthusiast.  The course is meant to be of interest and value to the entire family including older children.  It is offered on Saturday's from 9 AM to 5 PM or during the week from 7 to 9 PM over three weeks.

Subject areas covered include:
Getting Started (Boat terms and types, propulsion systems, boat handling, and docking)
What's Needed (Required safety equipment, navigation lights, fire extinguishers, distress signals, USCG boating safety standards, law enforcement, rendering assistance, state, and local regulations)
Rules to live by (Aides to navigation, sound signals, navigation rules, adverse conditions, medical emergencies, and marine radiotelephone)

There is a small fee for course materials but instruction is free.

State certification is available with satisfactory completion of course and an additional fee payable to Texas Parks and Wildlife.

Examination: Final exam upon completion

Certification: Certificate from SAPS qualifies a candidate for reduction on most boat insurance policies.
