Welcome to the Shrewsbury Power Squadron

We are a local unit in District 4 of the United States Power Squadrons®. USPS® is America’s largest non-profit, volunteer based organization dedicated to making boating safer and more enjoyable. Members enjoy the friendship and Camaraderie of other boaters through Advanced Educational Classes; Social, Family and Boating Activities, as well as Civic Service Activities. Our organization is overseen by our "Bridge Officers" ,who are elected each year and serve for 1 year.

USPS was founded in 1914, as a small group of power boaters
within the Boston Yacht Club, when most boats were sail boats.

Our Squadron was
chartered in 1940 and is located in Monmouth County, New Jersey. Squadron members are nearly equally divided between power and sail boaters. About half the membership currently owns a boat, which range in size from 11 to 65 feet. We typically enjoy boating in the Atlantic Ocean, in the Hudson River, near Sandy Hook Recreation Area, as well as in the Shrewsbury and Navesink Rivers.

The Squadron offers low cost
Public Boating Courses on basic boating to the public
wishing to obtain a NJ Safe Boating Certificate.
Occasionally, the Squadron presents
Seminars, which are open to the public, on various boating topics.

The squadron offers
Advanced Member's Boating Courses in subjects like Seamanship, Piloting and Navigation, Inshore and Offshore Cruise Planning, Engine Maintenance, Marine Electronics, Sailing, and much more.
USPS prides itself on education and our courses are taught by experienced Squadron members.

Our members also provide free service to the boating community by doing
Vessel Safety Checks (VSC's) on local vessels when requested by the owner. Our VSC examiners are trained to know what is required and can assist the boater in making sure his or her vessel is compliant with USCG regulations.

On-the-water activities include cruises, rendezvous, navigation contests and fishing contests. On-shore activites include
Membership Meetings with marine programs as well as Social Activites such as parties, dinner-dances, picnics and field trips.

Membership in the USPS is by application. Boat ownership is not a requirement of membership. Persons interested in learning more about boating, serving our community and making friends are encouraged to apply.
Applicants must be 18 years of age, pass an approved exam (typically the NJ Safe Boating Class offered by this squadron or another qualified class), pay
Dues and be accepted by the SPS Executive Committee. Family membership for spouses and children is also available.

Members receive the USPS publication,
THE ENSIGN.(Click on Member Resources, then select from categories below photo) as well as 6 issues of our squadron publication, "Twin Lights". (PDF)
