Canyon Runner ®
Sport Fishing
Adam LaRosa
and Captain Mark DeBlasio of Canyon Runner Sportfishing will be coming to speak with one of his
captains at our general meeting on May 12th at the Atlantic Highlands Yacht
Club. The main topic:
Building a Custom Cold Molded Sportfishing Yacht and
attracting corporate sponsors
The boat is a 60' Ritchie Howell that was built in
2008 in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. In addition to his Power Point
presentation on the actual build, he will have the captain that oversaw the
build from stem to stern. This is not a fun of the mill charter
boat. This is a custom yacht with an interior that was finished to the highest
standards.
In addition to the build of the custom sportfish,
Adam and his captain will also talk about the boat's Seakeeper
stabilizer system, the fishing seminars that they run on "Where to catch
the fish", etc. I'm sure that they can stay for a little while after
the meeting to answer any questions that people don't want advertised such as
"Where is the secret fishing spot for....?"
Adam LaRosa has been fishing as long as he could hold
a fishing pole on any one of the 37 boats his father, Captain Joseph LaRosa, has owned and operated through the years. At an
early age, Adam was capable of running the cockpit and by the age of 12 was a
full time Summer mate on several charter boats running
out of Manasquan Inlet, NJ. The knowledge he gained during those Summers, coupled with his father desire to get into the
charter fishing business, culminated in the purchase of the first Canyon
Runner, a 28' Bertram, to be put into service as a charter boat in 1984.
Over the past 25 years, as Adam has grown, so too have the Canyon Runner
vessels to the current Canyon Runner, a 60' Ritchie Howell custom Carolina sportfish. Over those years the Canyon Runner has taken
clients offshore over thousands of times and during those early years, Adam was
running the cockpit on most every trip while attending, High School, College
and Law School. Upon graduating Law School and passing the New York and New
Jersey Bars, he began his career in Manhattan, but still refuses to leave the
cockpit, managing to mate on 20-30 trips a year, between deals.
Fishing the Northeast Canyons for 25 years Adam has logged over 500 trips to
the continental shelf between The Dip, Hudson, Toms, Carteret, Lindencole, Spencer, Wilmington, and Baltimore Canyons.
Moreover, he has crewed the Canyon Runner to all of
its tournament victories and has been instrumental in molding the Canyon Runner
into the premier canyon charter boat on the East Coast and a top producer of
tuna and marlin every time the Canyon Runner heads to the continental shelf. In
addition, Adam has authored 20+ articles focusing on offshore fishing for the
Big Game Fishing Journal and developed the Canyon Runner Seminar Series.
He's written on the repower of their 48' VIking
convertible from Detroit Diesels to new Yanmar
engines. The Viking is also part of their fleet.
They also have a 32' Regulator for more inshore fishing.
Capt. Mark DeBlasio was provided with an opportunity and that
came with a hard decision after years in the "real" world hitting the
office from 9 to 5, . Stop the daily commute to NYC
and instead start a daily commute 100 miles southeast to the canyons. For Capt.
Mark the decision was not a hard one. After 18 years of fishing as much as his
work schedule allowed on the Desire out of Long Island with Mike Jacobs, Capt.
Mark joined the Canyon Runner Team in fall of 2004 and has not looked back.
Over the years he has logged more than 700 canyon trips and caught thousands of
tuna, marlin, swordfish and makos. Since joining us,
Capt. Mark has been behind the helm of one of our boats. His efforts produced
an all tackle world record in 2006 and have helped the Canyon Runner team to
its best seasons ever in 2005 and 2006.

A pictorial essay describing the need for the
Morris Canal in the early 1800's,
the
planning and building, the final configuration and its closing in the 1920's.

He has done presentations on GPS
and the Morris Canal.
Hank Keller
Our own SPS Member and Educational Officer, Hank did a presentation on
the proper Anchoring.
Hank Keller
Our own SPS Member and Educational Officer, Hank did a presentation on
the “10 Common Mistakes Boaters Make”.
Richard Prestholdt
Few people think about the fact that the Lewis and
Clark Expedition was mostly a water expedition. Their
Mission was to follow the Missouri to it's source and
connect with
the river of the West, the Columbia. They
actually used a
total of 25 different water vessels while
covering their
9,046 river miles.
Richard Prestholdt joined
the Discovery Expedition
of St.
Charles Missouri and participated in their 4 year, real
time (200
years later) re-enactment of the original Lewis and Clark Expedition. His
presentation will
focus on the boats used. Each one was reproduced by one of the
several living
history groups across the country that participated in the
Commemoration. You'll
enjoy seeing photos of all of them and how they were used.
As a member of the crew, Richard spend over 40 weeks
on the river with the
Corps and has a unique perspective to show and tell
us about. A resident of
Bridgewater and a life long
photographer he has presented several Lewis and Clark
programs over
the years.
Bob Hofmann
Our own SPS Member and teacher of Celestial Navigation to our members,
Bob gave us a in-depth overview of the GPS Navigation
system, and the history of the development of what makes it work.
