Our Purpose & Mission is that of the National Organization

 

To promote recreational boating skills and boating safety through education, hands-on training and civic activities while providing fellowship for members. In addition we offer our members and guests the opportunity for many exciting and fun activities both on and off the water, why not join us and expand your boating education and share the enjoyment and camaraderie with your fellow boaters.

The Smithtown Bay Power Squadron is located on the North Shore of Long Island, New York in the Township of Smithtown between the Towns of Huntington, Islip and Brookhaven. We welcome all qualified boaters and non-boaters to join our membership and share our fellowship and future.

 

 

 

PUBLIC EDUCATION

The Free Public America's Boating Course 3rd Edition is conducted in both the Spring and Fall, at the Hauppauge High School, Lincoln Blvd., Hauppauge, NY  on Tuesday evenings for a period of 5 weeks with the final exam at the last session. (Included in the course is Session on Personal Watercraft Operation).

MEMBER EDUCATION

USPS® Advanced and Elective Courses are conducted on Thursday evenings, in both the Spring and Fall, based on membership interest and are also available for nearby squadron members. These classes are held at the St. Thomas of Canterbury Parish House in Smithtown.

Advanced Courses consist of the following: Seamanship, Piloting, Advanced Piloting, Junior Navigation and Navigation.

Elective Courses consist of the following: Cruise Planning, Engine Maintenance, Marine Electronics, Sail, Weather and Instructor Development.

Next meeting Wednesday March 14, 2012, Stony Brook Yacht Club, Stony Brook, NY 8:00 pm.

A Seamanship Course began Thursday February 9th 7-9 pm for 6 weeks. Classes will be held at the St. Thomas of Canterbury Parish House, corner of Brookside Dr. & Edgewater Dr., Smithtown, NY. Contact Al Hiltunen (631 265-6561) or Marc Gottlieb (631 988-5087).

District 3 Memorial Service Sunday March 4, 2012

62nd Annual Change of Watch, will be held April 18th at the Stony Brook Yacht Club.

USPS Annual Meeting Jacksonville, FL was held January 25-29, 2012

2011 SBPS Annual Christmas Party was held with 38 Members and Guests in attendance, Thursday Dec. 8th at the Old Field Club, Go to Photo Albums 21/22.

District 3 Fall Education Conference was held Saturday Nov. 19 at the Melville Marriot.

Our Website & White Caps Publication have received  2011 Distinctive Communicator Awards from National.

Merit Marks for 2011 have been awarded by National. See the Committee Reports page for your name.

2011 Fall America's Boating Course concluded October 25, 2011, 11 students took the exam and all passed. 5 took the optional Navigation Classes.

Smithtown Bay Power Squadron By-Laws have been approved by National, effective 27 September 2011,and are available for download by clicking on SBPS By-Laws above.

June Meeting Sunday June 5th, a barbeque at Little Africa (Schubert Beach) was a great success many thanks to Lt./C Doug Schroeder, Tom and Anne Marie Rondi and the rest of the crew for making it such a grand affair. See Photo Album 21.

61st Annual Change of Watch, was held April 13th at the Stony Brook Yacht Club with 39 members and guests attending. See Photo Album 20.

District 3 Spring Conference and Change of Watch was held March 25-26 at the Huntington Marriott, Melville, NY. At this conference Smithtown Bay was awarded the Haedrich Memorial Trophy and came in 2nd place for the DEO Award.

SBPS Memorial Day Weekend Rendezvous West Hampton Beach Marina was May 28-30.

District 3 Rendezvous East, Mitchell Park Marina, Greenport, NY was July 29-31.
