Southport Sail and Power Squadron Burgee The Southport area played an important part in the birth and growth of the Nation. The burgee design appropriately characterizes our location at the junction of the Intracoastal Waterway, Cape Fear River and Atlantic Ocean. The blue in the upper half of the burgee is indicative of the blue skies and temperate climate that attracted early settlers. Notable voyagers and residents drawn to the area included Sir Walter Raleigh, Sir Francis Drake and the infamous Blackbeard. The white in the lower half of the burgee depicts the popular wide sandy beaches of Bald Head Island, Oak Island and the shores of the Cape Fear River. The three lighthouses are unusual due to their proximity to each other, and show the navigational difficulties of the area due to the treacherous nature of the shifting shoals, fierce tides and seasonal hurricanes.
