Heraldry of the Burgee

Spokane Sail & Power Squadron

SSPS Burgee

Rewritten from Oral Tradition, March 1995

The burgee of Spokane Sail & Power Squadron is an isosceles triangular pennant, with the base of the triangle formed by the hoist. The lenth of the fly is one and two-thirds times the height of the hoist.

The colors of the pennant are red, white, blue, and golden yellow. Starting from the hoist, the first forty percent of the length of the fly is dominated by a broad band of blue in the shape of a capital letter "S", extending the full height of the pennant. The letter "S" stands for Spokane, and the blue represents the Spokane River which flows year round through the heart of the Spokane area.

Filling the inside bottom curve of the blue "S" is a golden yellow circle rimmed with red, representing the sun rising over the falls of the Spokane River. This sun is also a symbol of the Tribe of the Spokane Indians who were the original stewards of the region. The red rim around the sun has eight points standing for the cardinal and intercardinal points of the compass.

The balance of the area between the hoist and the blue "S" and the golden yellow sun is white to represent the clear skies so common over Spokane. The outer sixty percent of the lenth of the fly, everything outboard of the blue letter "S", is an uninterrupted field of red to represent the sunset and broad expanse of wheatland that surrounds Spokane and is such a major factor in the life of Eastern Washington.
