Civic Activities

Much of what we do in Spokane Sail & Power Squadron, as well as throughout the United States Power Squadrons, is focused on promoting recreational boating safety - with an emphasis on safe boating through education. It is our goal to share this passion with all boaters of all types and ages.

America’s Boating Course teaches the basics of what every type of boater - power, sail, PWC, hunter, angler, paddler - needs to know as a bare minimum. America’s Boating Course is based on standards set by the U.S. Coast Guard and the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA). America’s Boating Course fully satisfies the mandatory boater education requirements of Washington and all other States. This 8-hour classroom course is offered in Spokane 5-6 times per year.

A free Vessel Safety Check is available for the asking by any boater. The Vessel Safety Check helps assure the boat owner that his/her vessel meets all Federal and State equipment and registration requirements.

To help provide community-wide awareness of the civic activities provided by Spokane Sail & Power Squadron, we participate actively in the Spokane National Boat Show each year. America’s Boating Course is taught at the Show and information is provided about our Advanced Education & Training program, our free Vessel Safety Checks, and the many benefits of Membership in the squadron.

Spokane Squadron’s Advanced Education & Training program covers a wide range of special-interest and advanced-skills courses and seminars. All Advanced Education & Training courses and seminars are open to the public and are taught primarily at the Squadron’s Clubhouse in Spokane.

Youth Activities offered by Spokane Sail & Power Squadron members are carefully focused on the age and skill levels of the youngsters involved. We have found that boaters of all ages are safer on the water when both the parents and kids share in the learning, especially together.
