UNITED STATES POWER SQUADRON (USPS)
The United States Power Squadrons (USPS) is a private, non-profit, non-governmental and non-military organization of men and women, who are socially compatible and have a common love and appreciation for pleasure boating (whether power or sail). Boat ownership is not a requirement. Objects of the organization are self-education, civic service, and social activities. There are no barriers to membership on grounds of race, religion, or ethnic background. Nationwide, USPS is comprised of some 60,000 members in over 450 Squadrons in all 50 states. Organized in 1914, USPS is the world’s largest private boating group.
TAR RIVER SAIL and POWER SQUADRON
The Tar River Power Squadron was founded in 1983 as an offshoot of the Kinston Power Squadron. The Tar River Power Squadron currently has over 100 members dedicated to safe boating, self-education, civic service and social activities. Member education is stressed. Nautical courses are offered yearly and are taught in an educational environment. They range from Seamanship to Celestial Navigation to Engine Maintenance to Cruise Planning.
One Civic Service by the Tar River Sail and Power Squadron members is giving the Boating course at least twice yearly to the public. Another is member reporting of corrections and additions to nautical charts to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). These reports assist in keeping charts up to date for all mariners.
Regular monthly membership meetings offer programs that are interesting and instructive as well as a chance to meet socially with other members. In addition, social affairs and rendezvous are a regular part of the calendar with a number of coastal and inland events.
DISTRICT 27
The Tar River Sail and Power Squadron is one of 16 squadrons in District 27 of USPS, all but one of which is located completely in North Carolina. The District sponsors 3 district meeting throughout the year, including the District Change of Watch in March, a Summer Council meeting in June and Fall council meeting in October to which all TRSPS members are invited. These meetings are held at major hotels in North Carolina and begin with hospitality suite socials on Friday evenings. A business meeting and another social follow this on Saturday.
