Valley Ho Power Squadron |
New Member Cruise and BBQ
This Cruise is scheduled to occur on a Saturday morning shortly after the final examination of the Basic
Boating (public) Class in November, April or September. The object of the
cruise is to provide the recently graduated students an on-the-water opportunity
to observe some of the nautical aids to navigation that have been shown on their
charts and discussed during the Boating class. Boats from the Valley Ho
Squadron are brought to the cruise so that teams of two to four students and one
or two proctors can work together making the observations. Also, graduates can
see the fellowship and camaraderie of Valley Ho Squadron members and their
spouses, and are encouraged to join the Valley Ho Squadron.
The cruise may take place at Marina del Rey, although a broader range of objects
can be seen in the Long Beach-Los Angeles Harbor area. Charts or copies of
chart segments will be made available to the teams on each boat so that
comparisons can be made between the chart symbols and the actual objects.
Upon completion of the boat tours, about one to two hours, a barbecue lunch is
provided either at facilities on shore, on one of the Valley Ho Fleet boats, or
on the dock adjacent to the secured boats. The lunch is prepared by Valley Ho
Squadron members or the Sea Gals. After the lunch a tour of the local Coast
Guard facility and vessel may be scheduled.
