Vessel Safety Check

Vessel Safety Check decalGood news for recreational boaters all over the United States. The decal pictured here is the newest issue from the cooperative efforts of the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary, the United States Power Squadrons and the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators.

According to USCG Aux records, only 1 percent of all recreational boats have been inspected for minimum equipment requirements. A number of members of the Venice Sail and Power Squadron participate as Vessel Safety Check examiners.

The Vessel Safety Check (VSC) is a free service provided by both organizations and is available both on the water and at dry dock (boat on trailer). Inspectors will go over the entire boat and offer suggestions to the operator that would make the boat compatible with the State and Federal Boating Laws.

Because of our year-round boating season, Florida ranks number one in boating fatalities and accidents. This new program will help reduce the tragedies on our waterways. Being a better equipped boater will certainly help change these statistics.

Look for inspectors at the local boat ramps on weekends and avail yourself of this free and extremely valuable service. Boaters whose vessels are in compliance will be issued a decal, shown above, to display on the boat.

To schedule your boat for inspection, contact our Vessel Safety Check chairman either by email P/C Kim O'Gorman, P, or phone at 1(941)497-0317
