NOS MARINE CHART DIVISION

The nautical chart is the most fundamental  navigation tool required for a safe passage of waterborne commerce and recreational boating.

The Marine Chart Division (MCD), which is a division of the Coast Survey part of NOAA, produces nautical charts and related publications.  The Division's Nautical Data Branch acquires all mapping and and charting data used in the compilation of nautical charts. New editions of charts are issued periodically because of man-made or natural changes.

The areas of chart coverage include the total area covered by the United States Exclusive Economic Zone (generally a 200 hundred-mile seaward limit) which measures over 11,000,000 square kilometers. The total number of charts maintained by the Marine Chart Division is in excess of 1000. Available chart coverage is depicted in a set of four paper chart catalogs and an on-line chart catalog (requires Maptech's Mapserver software).
