Chart Smart

Note: Chart Smart materials are no longer available from USPS Headquarters. This page will only remain available until the last Chart Smart classes are completed. There is no current stand-alone material equivalent to Chart Smart, but similar material is contained in the long (12-hour) version of America's Boating Course - 3rd Edition.

In addition to The Squadron Boating Course and Boat Smart course, the Chart Smart course is also provided as a civic program.   Chart Smart is intended for all USPS Boat Smart and ABC course graduates who are interested in information on compasses, charts, and plotting courses.  The only revision for Chart Smart 2002 is the introduction of Using Digital Charts.  The 2002 student manuals come with an Addendum and a CD-ROM, which includes the Maptech Chart Navigator software, a sampling of digital charts and maps across the country and digital versions of the Bowditch Bay and 1210Tr practice charts. Chart Smart subjects extracted from The Squadron Boating Course include: (25 Nov 05)

• Chart Smart PowerPoint slides.  These are updated versions of the files previously given to DEOs on CD.  They are organized by section, and range from 70 KB to 3246 KB in size. Instructor PowerPoint slides are also available on the Basic Boating Skills CD previously distributed to all DEOs and SEOs.  This CD is available in the Squadrons Materials Catalog under "Compact Disks (CD)s".

  Color overhead transparency masters in PowerPoint file format may be downloaded individually by section.  Use your browser's "save as" function (usually the right mouse button) to download the file and save it on your computer.  The size of each file is listed next to the file name.  Each file name is unique, and indicates to which section it applies.  Note that some sections have multiple files associated with them.  When downloading the section slide(s), be sure to also download the "master" slide backgrounds (the two files with the ".pot" names), since these two files are necessary to properly view the background for all the Chart Smart slides.
