The Boating on Rivers, Locks and Lakes Seminar:

  • Is the first educational course or seminar designed specifically for the vast number of inland boaters;
  • Presents a unique opportunity for members of the general public to meet experienced local cruisers and learn about the local squadron; and
  • Covers subjects unique to inland cruising that are not dealt with in other USPS courses and seminars.

The seminar deals with such varied topics as special navigation rules for rivers, the Western Rivers System of buoys and marks, river currents, “reading” a river, jetties and wing dams, the intricacies of locking through, and communicating with lock masters and bridge tenders. Instructors are encouraged to supplement the seminar presentation with local charts and presentations by experienced boaters about local waters and cruising routes.

Each student receives a full color student guide that has been specifically written for the seminar.  This “mini-manual” contains many illustrations and photos of typical inland navigational aids, locking procedures, and river subjects. The instructor/presenter kit contains a CD with a PowerPoint presentation and notes for the instructor.
