USPS Information Technology Committee Bulletin # 02 - 27 June 2002 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Summary: The following message was received by the system administrator for the USPS server. It indicates that Verio, the company from whom we rent server space, will be moving "our" server to a new location. We are advised that the server and all web sites housed on it will be down between 0200 and 0600 Pacific Time (PDT?) on July 8, 2002. That should be between 0600 and 1000 EDT. Since the server is being physically moved, it would be prudent to back up any data you view as critical. Verio does a backup every night at midnight. However, the same media is used over again the next night so restoring can only be done in a 24 hour window. A good general practice is to keep your own periodic backups on your own computer. -------------------------------------------------------- To: eduda@usps.org From: Verio/NTT Customer Service Subject: Service Migration for dsi-linux20383 Dear Valued Customer, Verio is committed to providing its customers with the best products and services available. With this commitment in mind, we have recently opened a number of new, state-of-the-art data centers nationwide. In March of 2001, Verio opened a new data center in San Jose, California. This data center features multiple OC-12 circuits from multiple carriers to our Global Tier 1 backbone, redundant power systems, advanced environmental controls and a multi-level fire detection and suppression system. On July 8th, Verio will be moving the servers through which your services are hosted to the new San Jose facility. Your site will experience approximately 4 hours of downtime when we move the servers. We will endeavor to confine the downtime to the hours of 2-6 a.m. Pacific Time. We will work diligently to make the transition as seamless as possible for your organization. If you have any questions about the transition, please contact our support department. They will be sure that your question is distributed to the appropriate people for a timely response. Our migration team has taken stringent precautions to ensure this service migration is a complete success. However, there is always a risk of hardware failure during any physical migration. To minimize the impact of any migration related service disruptions, we encourage you to backup all critical data on your server(s) prior to the migration. In advance, we thank you for your cooperation in this matter. Your business is greatly appreciated and we hope that Verio can continue to help your business grow in the future. Sincerely, Isabel Ehringer President, Enterprise Hosting Verio Inc.
