What Does a Squadron/District
Law Officer Do?

A squadron law officer is a USPS member who is licensed to practice law in at least one of the states served by the squadron. The law officer provides legal advice to the squadron's Executive Committee. A district law officer is similarly licensed and advises the District Council and District Conference. The USPS Bylaws assign certain responsibilities for member discipline to the district law officer. That's why the Bylaws require appointment of a law officer in every district.

LawCom will work with local law officers on issues affecting both National and the local unit. Questions to LawCom about local issues should come through the local law officer. This respects the continuing professional relationship between the unit and its attorney.
