The Boarman Youth Poster Contest, sponsored by "Woody" Boarman, is presented annually to nine youth in the hopes that by
creating posters, it will further youths' appreciation of the water and safe boating. The posters are judged at the USPS Annual Meeting with a list
of submissions to Youth@usps.org by 1 January. The Civic Service Award is sponsored by the BoatU.S. Foundation as recognition for a squadron's outstanding contributions to the communities they serve. This award includes not only the boating classes and VSCs, but may be expanded to public seminars and workshops, scholarships, courtesy marine patrols, media interviews, children's safety programs, etc. Submissions must be received by the designated person by 15 December. The Doing It Right Award is presented to squadrons who are "Doing It Right". Over the years the National Membership Committee has developed a list of what healthy squadrons do to ensure their growth from year to year. This list was used by the National Membership Committee (MEMCOM) as the basis for developing the questionnaire for the Doing It Right Award. MemCom also recognizes that sometimes a squadron can do many things right and still struggle with declining membership and public boating course attendance. These questions are designed to give a squadron a New Course to Chart, new ideas to try and recognize the squadrons that are trying to "Do It Right". Submissions must be received by the designated person by 15 December. Consider this questionnaire a list of what a squadron can do to improve its tone and performance. If a squadron can answer yes to 15 of the 25 questions in 2010, 16 in 2011 and 18 in 2012 and 20 in 2013 than a symbol (yet to be designed) can be placed on their newsletter and website to announce to all squadrons that they are "DOING IT RIGHT". All Districts in which every squadron fills out the questionnaire, will be allowed to also place the "Doing It Right" Award on their website and newsletter. The Growth Award is earned by a squadron having a retention rate of 87%, plus shows an increase in membership. The award is evidenced by presentation of a "Growth Award Certificate" at the Annual Meeting. Renewal Rate measures the number of members retained over a given period of time. USPS Membership Committee time period for measuring all membership statistics is a calendar year. The formula is: 1 January Membership total minus the number of new members obtained during the year divided by the 31 December membership total. Example: Previous end of year total = 150 Number of New Members = 24 Current end of year including new members = 162 Retention Rate = (162 - 24) / 150 = .92 x 100% or 92% Renewal (Retention) Rate Membership Growth = 162 / 150 = 1.08 - 1.00 = .08 x 100% or a Growth rate of 8% This level of tracking helps view the membership as a whole and highlights elements that may be supporting growth or pulling down membership numbers.
