The success of the Lake Murray Power Squadron recruiting new members cannot be attributed to just one thing. I think it has evolved over several years of progressive leadership. In past years we have attracted successful business leaders that just happened to be avid boaters. This core of individuals de-emphasized the military format of USPS and increased the fun part of boating while keeping the focus on promoting safe boating.

What I'm trying, unsuccessfully, to say is that we do a lot of boating. After all, isn't that what we all came together for in the first place; to learn how to boat safely? We consider boating activities as the lab part of the classroom; the place to practice what we learn in the courses we take.

We also have several other things that I feel contribute to our success: We have close proximity to what was, when first constructed, the largest man-made lake in the united States and such ports-of-call as Charleston and Beaufort, SC and Savannah, GA within easy trailing distance of Columbia, SC. And all linked by the Intercoastal Waterway.

To answer some of your questions, our spring class is always the largest. We use exposure at the local Boat Show, held in January, as well as what radio and newspaper releases we can get published to attract students in the spring. We depend on the media solely for students in the fall.. We had 101 students enroll this spring. Of the 80 that took the test, we have already signed 30 new members to the squadron.

Since the rules have changed, we talk a lot about membership during the classes. We have a short slide presentation with pictures of past cruises and guest speakers, as well as our facilities.

One of the other aspects of our squadron that I believe attracts new members is our monthly meetings. Over the past several years, we have been successful in recruiting guest speakers that have been very entertaining and informative. This helps in keeping our older members that have "retired" from boating

As you can see, we don't have a secret formula to attract new members. Just a set of conditions that, at this time, are affording success in recruiting.
