Mission:    Continue developing District and Squadron Executive Officers as leaders and role models.

Objective:  Executive Officer training that is scalable and repeatable at both the District & Squadron levels.

 

Goals:

  • Provide leadership training consistent with USPS strategies
  • Utilize courses/programs previously developed (Leadership Development, Operations Training and Instructor Development)
  • Build new material designed specifically for the Executive Department at the District & Squadron levels

 

Duration:     7 hours

Activities:    Team exercises and practice case studies

Certificate:   Successful students will receive a certificate

DB2000:       Will add a field to indicate completion

Participants:    DAO/SAO completion is the prerequisite for attendance. In-coming & sitting District and Squadron Executive Officers will be given preference for attendance at no charge. Remaining available seating will be open to any member having completed DAO/SAO at a fee of $60 to help defray costs.

Introduction and Ice-breaker 9:00am - 9:15am

 

Module 1: 9:15am - 10:45am:  (break included): Leadership Knowledge and Skills - fundamental principles of leadership and management in the USPS setting

  • Leadership Styles
    • Different Styles of Leadership
    • Finding your own style
    • Implications of different styles in the USPS
  • This module will combine lecture and team exercises

 

Break: 10:30am - 10:45 am

 

Module 2: 10:45am -12:00pm: Teambuilding Techniques - methods for developing and managing high-performance work teams and committees in the USPS environment.

  • Fundamentals of Problem Solving
  • Goal Oriented Leadership: Formulating goals in USPS
    • Goal Development and Setting Objectives
    • Selecting Milestones
    • Measuring performance
    • RACI review
  • This module will build upon the skills learned in the DAO/SAO Training and feature some practical tools for analyzing problem situations with action steps

 

Break: 12:00pm - 1:00pm - Working Lunch (begin Case Study)

 

Module 3: 1:00pm- 2:30pm: Problem Solving - Develop goals and an action plan to address a typical squadron challenge - hands on application using the knowledge and skills gained in DAO/SAO Training  

  • Case Study featuring Cdr Grumpy Wilson, SN, his wife, Evil Queen, Lt/C Happy Peters, JN and the other Diamond Mine Squadron characters - This squadron is no longer in Wisconsin, but now in Alabama
  • Solution Report-out - summary of team prepared solution

Break: 2:30pm - 2:45pm

 

Module 4: 2:45pm - 3: 15pm: USPS Structure: XO Department, Jobs, Responsibilities and Committees. Brief Review of Operations Training information and Job Descriptions. This module is specifically designed for the XO

  • Resources - USPS websites, Bylaws, Operations Manual, Job Descriptions - Where to look and what to read
  • Organizational structure - National, District and Squadron Committees
  • Looking ahead to the year as Commander

 

Module 5: 3:15pm - 3:45pm: Planning and Executing Effective Meetings - Platform Presence

  • Use your own style
  • Active listening
  • The art of questioning

 

Module 6:  3:45pm - 4:00pm Closing, Evaluation and Follow-up

 

 

Course Leader: Stf/C Anita Walker, JN or Stf/C Susan L. Darcy, JN

 

Anita is a member of the National Leadership Development and Membership Committees, a Certified Instructor, and an Operations Training Program presenter.  She teaches Instructor Development and the Public Boating Course.  Anita has a BS in Economics from the University of Illinois and an MBA in Operations Management from Illinois Benedictine University. During her manufacturing/consulting days, Anita was on the national training team employee faculty for Johnson and Johnson, Coopers & Lybrand, Gemini Consulting and KPMG.  Subjects included: Leadership Development, Team Building, Quality, Operations/Supply Chain Improvement, Organizational Structure and Strategy, Organizational Turnaround, Safety and other manufacturing/government topics.  


Susan's main focus has been the Leadership Development Workshop (LDW).  After the University of Massachusetts with additional courses at MIT, Susan began her engineering career in the aerospace defense business.  As a member of General Electric’s Defense Systems business, Susan was selected to attend various courses in engineering and leadership training leading to certification in facilitation.  Using this skill set, Susan traveled extensively to various business locations within the corporation giving workshops on leadership along with technical skills.  After a series of sales and mergers, Susan completed her career retiring from Lockheed Martin as a Senior Staff Engineering Project Manager and certified facilitator.  Currently, she serves as District chair of Squadron Development.  At the national level, Susan’s previously served as a Staff Commander for the Membership Committee.  Presently, besides finalizing revisions to the LDW, developing presentations, and assisting where needed on LDCOM, Susan maintains various websites including Membership, District 2 and Squadron websites.
