Where:       Cabela's in Hoffman Estates  5225 Prairie Stone Pkwy, Hoffman Estates, IL 60192-   

Mission:    Continue developing District and Squadron members as leaders and role models.

Objective:  Provide training for Officers and Chairs that is scalable and repeatable at both the District & Squadron levels

Prerequisites: USPS Leadership LD 101 and 102 completions are prerequisites for attendance

 

Goals:

  • Provide leadership training consistent with USPS strategies
  • Utilize courses/programs previously developed (Leadership Development, Operations Training and Instructor Development)
  • Build new material designed specifically for members at the District & Squadron levels

Duration:            7 hours

Media:                  PowerPoint presentation

Materials:            Detailed course notes provided to each student

Activities:            Team exercises and practice case studies

Certificate:          Successful students will receive a certificate

DB2000:              Successful completion will be indicated on DB2000

Participants:      All USPS members are encouraged to attend.

Fee:  All students will be charged $75.00 to help defray the cost of printing materials, coffee breaks, lunch, and Facilitator Travel.

Introduction and Ice-breaker 0900 - 0915

Module 1 0915 -1030: Leadership Knowledge and Skills – re-affirm the fundamentals of leadership covered in LD 101 and LD 102

  • Motivational Theory and Leadership
    • Motivational models
    • Motivation in the USPS setting
    • Influencing behavior
  • Goal Setting and the Commander’s Legacy
  • This module will combine theory with the subjects of Principles of Leadership, Leadership Styles and other foundation material from LD 101 and LD 102.

 

Break 1030 - 1045

 

Module 2  1045 - 1200: Teambuilding Techniques - methods for developing and managing high-performance work teams and committees

  • Attitudes Revisited
  • How Leadership Styles and Motivational Techniques influence team development/success
  • This module will build upon the skills learned in LD 101 and LD 102 and feature some practical tools for increasing membership involvement. A key element will be overseeing all of the committees at the District or Squadron level and the links between them

 

Break 12:00pm - 1300 - Working Lunch (begin Case Study)

 

Module 3  1300 - 1430: Problem Solving - Develop goals and an action plan to address a typical squadron challenge - hands on application using the knowledge and skills gained in LD 101 and LD 102 as well as Modules 1 and 2 of this seminar.

  • Case Study featuring Cdr Daisy Ducker, JN, P/C Grumpy Brown, SN and the other Diamond Mine Squadron characters
  • Solution Report-out - summary of team prepared solution

 

Break 1430 - 1445

 

Module 4  1445 - 1515: Operations Training: The Commander’s Department, Jobs, Responsibilities and Committees. Brief Review of Operations Manual. This module is specifically designed for the Commander

  • Where to look and what to read
  • Some thoughts on the Nominating Committee
  • Hosting a Chief’s Rep at a District Conference

 

Module 5 1515 - 1545: Planning and Executing Effective Meetings — Styles, Meetings and Conflict Resolution

  • Using your own leadership style for conducting effective meetings
  • Problem solving in a meeting environment (review of handling conflict in a public forum)

 

Module 6 1545 - 1600: Closing - One More Story and Complete Evaluations

Course Leader: Course Leader: R/C Susan L. Darcy, JN

 

Susan’s main focus has been the Leadership Development Workshop (LDW).  After the University of Massachusetts with additional courses at MIT, Susan began her engineering career in the aerospace defense business.  As a member of General Electric’s Defense Systems business, Susan was selected to attend various courses in engineering and leadership training leading to certification in facilitation.  Using this skill set, Susan traveled extensively to various business locations within the corporation giving workshops on leadership along with technical skills.  After a series of sales and mergers, Susan completed her career retiring from Lockheed Martin as a Senior Staff Engineering Project Manager and certified facilitator.  Currently, she serves as District chair of Squadron Development.  At the national level, Susan’s previously served as a Staff Commander for the Membership Committee.  Presently, Susan serves as Chair of LDCOM , developing presentations, and assisting where needed on LDCOM.
