 2012 Past Commanders BBQ
Bartlett Lake

Many of your past commanders met recently to plan this weekend of fun and celebration. My thanks go especially to Paul and Grace Schoonover for hosting the planning meeting, where we were entertained in fine style as we put the details of the weekend together.
It was decided to use the same location as we did for last November’s Turkey Fry, with so many members complimenting Bill Johnson on his choice of location; how could we go wrong by re-visiting the same site for the P/C BBQ ???

We will have access to the location from midday on Friday 16 March until 12 noon on the Sunday. RV'ers can take advantage of this great facility for the all-inclusive (sorry ..no power!) price of $25 per RV. We are, of course, looking for a 'volunteer' to take charge on Friday afternoon and chase away the 'locals' who would like to make our location their own for the weekend!!

All others will be asked to contribute just $8 per head for the awesome feast that is promised to be served by your loyal past Commanders. We already have commitments for BBQ chicken, smoked pork shoulder, brisket, brownies, cole slaw, ice cream and many other wonderful victuals. Soft drinks and water will be supplied, adult beverages are left to the choice of the individual attendees.

Please help us make this event a celebration of past, present and future for our squadron ... we have a wonderful Bridge in place for this watch year, and all your past Commanders are so proud of the new slate of officers Give them your support, and you will find that our squadron will continue to grow in strength and numbers as we have shown it can do in the past.

Posing for the camera at the 2011 Barbecue are Past Commanders (from left) Bill Johnson, Chris Lockyer-Bratton, Jim Hill, Fred Drawert, Chuck and Jane Peterson, Lee Whitehead, Ron Werner, Paul Schoonover, David Allocco, Connie Johnson, John Lusson, Les Ormsby and John Yount.

Everyone is invited to the Annual Past Commanders BBQ to be held on 19 March, 2011 at Lake Pleasant. We have reserved the Spring Canyon at the Pleasant Harbor for Friday, March 18 and Saturday, March 19. The BBQ will be Saturday with social time about 3:00 PM, dinner at 4:00 and a General Membership Meeting to follow. Feel free to arrive as early as you want because some folks will be there from Friday through Sunday.?

Spring Canyon has two ramadas, electricity, water, and a large fire pit. It has a gentle slope to the water so you can launch a small boat, canoe or kayak. There is room for a number of RV’s, boats on trailers, and tents. You can come on Friday and stay until Sunday if you want. There are concrete tables but if you bring a chair you might be more comfortable.

Spring Canyon is next to the Pleasant Harbor North Ramp so you can spend part of the weekend boating on Lake Pleasant.
Your hosts for this event will be the Squadron’s Past Commanders. They have planned an excellent BBQ. They plan to provide beef brisket, chicken, potato salad, beans, coleslaw, garlic bread, lemonade, various other salads, deserts, pie and ice cream!
After the formal activities, the evening will be quite informal and will include a campfire.

The cost to enter Pleasant Harbor is $6.00 per car. The cost of the BBQ is $8.00. As always, children are free. Here are the directions to Spring Canyon:

From Phoenix, take SR 74 (Carefree Highway) west to Pleasant Harbor Blvd. This is on the east side of Lake Pleasant. (Do not drive all the way to the Maricopa County Regional Park). Go north approximately 2 miles on Pleasant Harbor Blvd. and turn left (west) to enter Pleasant Harbor. After you pass the entrance gate, turn right and follow the signs to the North Ramp. Spring Canyon is immediately to the right (east) of the North Ramp. It’s a paved driveway down to the Ramadas.

The 2011 Past Commander’s Bar-B-Que attracted around 50 members and guests who were treated to a feast of succulent beef and chicken with all the trimmings. My thanks go out to David Allocco and all the past commanders for putting on this great event!
