The scanned charts can be TIF, BMP, JPG, GIF, PNG, PCX and after they are
processed with the calibration software they become BSB.

The subject is discussed on the following web page:

see the following for step by step instructions.

Do you know if the scanned chart is actually in BSB format? Other
programs, such as NavPak, can create electronic charts from scanned
charts, but they can't be used in the Maptech software provided to our
boating course students. I think I read somewhere that BSB is a Maptech
proprietary format. Anyone more knowledgeable on that?

While doing research on pocket PC's for navigation purposes I ran into
several comments that said they would take scanned paper charts or
newspapers for that matter and if you can put the lat and lon in for
opposite corners their software will make the conversion to BSB suitable
charts.

Unfortunately this one is not free ware.

Is anyone aware of a freeware or shareware program that can be used to
create a BSB chart that will work in Maptech? We have an accurately
drawn chart of a lake that I would like to make into an electronic chart
similar to the free NOAA charts.

Good Morning All,

The US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) web site has Electronic charts
that my be downloaded. There is also a freeware program that can be
downloaded to use the downloaded charts. These are the charts that will
be used when we begin doing chart work for USACE.
