Earl,
I suspect the error message is a ringer for "that old stuff will not work
with our beautiful new Windows". Assuming your friend has the original disk,
the new computer has no way of knowing that it had been installed before.
(Unless maybe it is a floppy which was written on during installation.)
Really old apps do not work well with XP. I had to abandon several of my
favorites. According to magazine reviews all but recent versions of Money
are inferior to any version of Quicken. Money has caught up, so buy a new
one. There is probably a rebate for doing the upgrade.
My bank upgraded to newer versions of Quicken, and I had no choice but to
upgrade. They stopped supporting the older ones. Intuit probably forced the
new versions on the banks. I hate the newest version. It is cluttered with
junk I do not use and cannot remove, and I get sales messages continually
from Intuit. I guess one can get used to being abused.
