To: District Planning Network Members

From: R/C William M Bellinger, SN

               PlanCom Chair

Your response to our previous D-Plan-Net communiqué was very impressive; 21
districts responded. Our new “mailman” delivery system should help manage
the issue of constantly changing e-mail addresses
as you might expect, it is
very difficult to keep track of 70+ addresses. If you change your email
address, please use the mailman administrative tools associated with your
account to keep your account information current and to inform us of the
change; go to the D-Plan-Net information page
(http://www.usps.org/mailman/listinfo/d-plan-net), click on the button
“Unsubscribe or edit options,” log in using your old email address and
account password, fill in your new information (email address) in the areas
indicated and finally, click on the “Change My Address and Name” button.

In our last message we stated;

“The newly revised Planning Committee Manual is now posted on our Web site.
It contains a new section on how to write a strategic plan. This could be
very helpful to squadrons and districts that want to set either short or
long-term goals. Another item that will soon be posted is the newly revise
Strategic Plan. This section will offer many helpful suggestions on making
improvements in each of the areas. You should find both documents helpful if
used.”

Well, the newly revised 2006 USPS Strategic Plan can now also be found along
with the original SP at our Web site in the Resources section. It addresses
each of the seven goals (Awareness, Communications, Education, Financial
Stability, Government and Partner Relations, Leadership, and Membership
Growth and Retention) and offers suggestions that can help your committee or
department, at all levels: squadron, district, or national. You may find
something you already use or something you might find useful.

With a shrinking membership and subsequent loss of potential leaders there
is truly a need for planning ahead. In the Planning Committee Manual you can
find a process by which your squadron or district can create a Strategic
Plan of its own. Regardless of your plan being short term or long term, it
can set a course that will carry you forward for up to five years.

Let us know what you think about the revised Strategic Plan:

* Do the new goals seem more general and easier to implement than the
old SP?

* What do you think about the suggestions?

* Which goal/goals and Suggestions do you feel need more attention in
your district?

* What areas we should revisit?

More news:

Recently PlanCom was contacted by a squadron commander from D19 seeking some
help in establishing a marketing/partnership opportunities in the community.
This commander believes a nationwide campaign (with some standardized
guidelines and literature from national) for all squadrons would help them
in partnering with their local businesses and communities. After explaining
this goal to R/C Bob Green, N (Marketing/PR Com) he set his committee right
to work on developing such plans.

One of the most difficult tasks is finding or developing a program that is
equitable to all squadrons and districts regardless of location. What works
in New York may not work in the heartland or in San Diego. Each area has its
own “best practices and unique movers and shakers,” so it is usually up to
the local unit to make its own way. A program that promotes local partnering
can go a long way to increase exposure of USPS to “the rest of the world.”

The first weekend Leadership Development Workshop (LDW) will begin in June.
Stf/C Herb Shaw, JN, having extensive experience in the leadership arena,
has created this comprehensive workshop, and the Leadership Development
Committee has reviewed and given its approved. Stf/C Shaw has found three
extremely talented presenters with whom he will begin the process of
“training the trainers.” They are; P/R/C Glenn Daughtridge, AP, D/Lt/C
Arthur Kimber, SN and Stf/C Robert Landeros, SN. Newark, Atlanta, Chicago
and San Francisco have been tentatively chosen for subsequent district LDWs.
Dates have not as yet been established. In the near future, D/Cs will
receive detailed information on the LDW and will be asked to select a
qualified person(s) to represent their district at the nearest conclave.

We hope to hear from you all
that is, all 33 districts!
