From hamiltjc at visi.com Thu Jan 10 07:27:55 2008 From: hamiltjc at visi.com (hamiltjc) Date: Thu, 10 Jan 2008 06:27:55 -0600 Subject: [D-plan-net] Leadership Development Workshop Message-ID: Leadership Development Workshop 1 January 2008 District Commanders, The Planning Committee wholeheartedly thanks you for your support of USPS by your participation in the Leadership Development Workshop (LDW). We believe that improving local leadership will enable our squadrons to maintain their programs and begin to grow. You most likely have read that 22 districts sent 55 representatives for this training. Our highest praise goes to those of you that have begun plans to conduct squadron LDWs. Aligning with the original process, you might consider using the "invitation only" approach: your squadron commanders would invite special members deemed best qualified and committed to assume leadership roles in their squadron. Also, consider that those who will be trained may someday move into district positions. Ask your Planning Committee and your Operations Training Committee to begin working on a plan to offer the LDW to as many squadron members as possible, and on an ongoing basis. We know that some districts and squadrons have little trouble getting good leaders. God bless them! Many however, are not so blessed. The LDW training, offered on an ongoing basis, will help. For various reasons eleven districts; D25 (CA), D3 (NY), D7 (OH), D15 (LA), D18 (MA), D19 (NH), D8, D22, D23 (FL), D26 (SC), D33 (PR) did not send a representative to the regional LDW. At this time we strongly recommend these districts consider sending a representative to the next LDW offered in a neighboring participating district. Please contact a neighboring district not included in the list above to find LDW schedule information and to make arrangements for your representative(s) to attend! We, of course, are asking districts that participated in the regional LDWs to help their neighboring districts. Interestingly, none of the districts in Florida attended the regional workshop in Atlanta. We are not sure if these districts were uninterested, didn't have monetary support or couldn't find an enthused members to make the commitment. We will consider offering a regional LDW in Florida if we have the promise of attendance by these districts. Florida districts, please let us know. All D/Cs, please share this information with your DXO and your Bridge as they also have a stake in helping the squadrons improve leadership. If you need basic information on the LDW to copy or pass along, please visit the National Planning Committee home page (http://www.usps.org/national/plancom/) on the National web site. You will find the announcement and brochure for the 2007 LDW as originally posted. By any name, these squadrons are facing losses in membership and are having a more difficult time filling organizational positions. There are, of course, many other individual or local issues that may be unique to a given ailing squadron. The attached document entitled, "Diagnosis and Treatment for an Ailing Squadron" (file name "Ailing Squadrons 2008.doc") contains a great amount of information on the subject. One thing is certain; we cannot overemphasize the importance of communication. Don't let the "UN" be a prefix of choice! "UN" is a communications killer; an uncaring or untrained calling committee, uninteresting meetings, uninformative newsletters, unanswered phone calls, letters, or email. Help your squadrons delete the "UN" and improvements should begin to surface. Please review all the items in our report and share them with squadrons (anyone) that may be interested. Some of the suggestions may be helpful right now while others may be useful in the future. Awareness, however, puts a squadron ahead of the curve. Those in leadership positions owe it to their members to get what is needed to conduct successful activities. Make sure your squadrons do not hesitate to make contact with their district or national counterparts for assistance. Communicate! Thank you, R/C William M.
