Hi to All on the List,

Watch here for dates and times for Operations Training and Instructor
Development classes.

II think this list can be useful if we can get more people on it and actually
use it. Lets try to promote the list at the conference. More and better
communication can be nothing but a good thing.

Dot Christopher

Dot:

Will be happy to talk up the list at the confernce and the squadron.

Any word on the cruise details? Our boating class is underway, and we have
only 5 more weeks to get the word out on the cruise. It would be great if
we had a signup sheet to hand out and "close the sale" in person between now
and April 3. I learned my lesson last time about trying to sign up people
in advance using an unofficial form. Won't try and jump the gun. We will
begin selling as soon as the details are forthcoming. After the class ends,
communications gets harder, more expensive ($20 for a mailing) and less
effective than face to face in the class room.

Regards,

Brian

From Dot Christopher
Aren't you glad you are on the list? Here is the advanced scoop on this
year's .
Graduation Cruise

The Graduation Cruise for 2001/02 will take place on Friday evening, June 14.
We will sail Cape Ann Waters on the 144 passenger Freedom, from the Yankee
Fleet Dock at the Cape Ann Marina on Rt.133 in Gloucester. Boarding will
start at 6:30 PM for a 7:00 sailing. Outward bound we will be able to follow
the provided facsimile charts to track the navigational aids. As darkness
sets in we will pick out the lighted aids. Our narrators will help with the
navigation aids as well as pointing out interesting features along the way
along the way. A light buffet supper is included in the $22.00 price.
Graduates of all District 18 Squadrons' Public boating Classes and member's
courses will be recognized. All Squadron members are encouraged to join us in
welcoming our graduates and new members. Everyone is welcome to bring a
guest. This will be an outstanding event. Last year's cruise drew rave
reviews. Watch for the official flyer. Sign up early and save the committee a
lot of gray hairs.

From Dot Christopher, Merrimac River Sail and Power Squadron

Which Squadron can have the most Vessel Examiners in 2002? The following and
my previous message on the Graduation Cruise can be used in Squadron news
letters. Please be sure your Editor joins this list.

Join the Vessel Safety Check Team, Become an Examiner.

The old Courtesy Marine Examination Program of the Coast Guard Auxiliary has
had a face-lift and is now the Vessel Safety Check Program and is a joint
program of the Coast Guard Auxiliary and USPS.

If you would like to be part of a program to save lives and help the public
boat safely? You can be a member of the team by completing the training.
Vessel Examiner Training includes studying the book, a two-session class,
passing the test and doing five supervised vessel checks. The classes will be
held on Saturday, April 6 from 2:00 to 4:30 (Combine this with OT that
morning?) and on Saturday morning April 13. The books will be distributed
and should be read before the first class. To register or if you have
questions call Jim Curran, 978-927-2932, Jcu@nii.net or Dot Christopher,
978-475-5470, jwdpchris@aol.com. You can also call Jim or Dot if you would
like to have a Vessel Safety Check done on your boat.

If you have been wondering about the new vessel safety checks, the following
is from the USPS.Org web site.
What is a Vessel Safety Check (VSC)?
A Vessel Safety Check is a courtesy examination of your boat (Vessel) to
verify the presence and condition of certain Safety Equipment required by
State and the Federal regulations. The Vessel Examiner is a trained
specialist and is a member or the US Power Squadrons or the US Coast Guard
Auxiliary. They will also make certain recommendations and discuss certain
safety issues that will make you a safer boater.
This is not boarding or a law enforcement issue. No citations will be given
as a result of this encounter. We will supply you with a copy of our
evaluation so that you may follow some of the suggestions given. Vessels that
pass will be able to display our distinctive VSC decal. This does not exempt
you from law enforcement boarding, but you can be prepared to make this a
positive encounter.

Operations Training

Operations Training is the class where all the workings of USPS are
explained. This year's class will be on Saturday Morning, April 6 from 8:30
to 12:30. Merrimac River will be hosting this District venture at the
Christopher's home in Andover. Dick Winskowicz will be the class presenter.
Dick, a member of the Beverly Squadron, is a Past Squadron and Past District
Commander. He has been active on the national level as a member and Past
Chairman of the Education Department's Cruise Planning Committee. The
Operations Training class is for everyone who has not taken it before or
within the last 3 years. It will be especially useful to all officers,
committee members and new members. Best of all, the course is free and
goodies will be served. There is always more to learn about our great
organization. The better we understand it, the stronger it will be. To
register, if you have questions or if you need directions, please call Dick
at 978-750-8848 or Dot at 978-475-5470. Please call by March 26 so books
can be ordered.

Greetings D18!
Currently working on the D18 Roster where the host
sqds are listed. The madness behind the sequence is
alphabetical order of sqd-names ...
2002 Sprg - Beverly
2002 Fall - Broad Sound
2003 Sprg - Gloucester
2003 Fall - Marblehead
2004 Sprg - Merrimac River
2004 Fall - Beverly
2005 Sprg - Broad Sound
2005 Fall - Gloucester
ect.
When we hold a 4D joint conference, then ALL squadrons
will be pushed down one.

Hi D18 list members:

I would like to thank Susan Schanning for sparking the dormant list to =
life. It should prove to be beneficial for all of us in sharing =
district 18 information. Last Wednesday, I called Bill Reid, the SEO of =
Broad Sound, and he informed me that he did not know of anyone from the =
squadron, who attends meetings, with E-mail access. He stated that he =
would try to attend the D18 Conference and I told him of the VSC and =
Co-op Charting possibilities for Broad Sound. He said that Vincent J. =
Scagliotti, Jr., is the new Cdr of Broad Sound and that Vincent J. =
Scagliotti, Sr., is the Executive Officer. Susan: how do you determine =
the number of people subscribing to the list and can we determine the =
names of members ?

The Christophers of Andover, will have training sessions at their home =
on 6 April for Operations Training in the morning and Vessel Safety =
Check in the afternoon. There will be an exam on 13 April for VSC in the =
morning. =20

Jack Daniels, the Co-op chair for D18, recently gave me a copy of =
Nautical Chart 13274, Portsmouth Harbor to Boston Harbor. It covers the =
shoreline of D18 with slight extensions to Portsmouth and Boston. I =
suggest that we discuss the possibility of the district working toward =
adoption of this chart with Jack at the upcoming D18 Conference. This =
chart, Dated May 12/01,. contains 44 listings of public marine =
facilities which could be added to or updated. Several reports were =
sent in since the publication date by Beverly and Marblehead squadrons =
in connection with the Salem Harbor Chart. =20

Hi everyone:

If you're interested in taking a Weather Course this spring, P/R/C John =
Bedrossian, SN will be teaching it starting Monday, April 1. The class =
will be meeting on Monday's from 7-9PM at the Boston Yacht Club, Yardarm =
building, in Marblehead. This is the new modular course that uses a the =
USA Today Weather text, plus a USPS course supplement. John worked on =
the national committee that put the course together, and is excited =
about what looks like a very much more readable text with lots of good =
color pictures. Course fee is $60 and includes the text, supplement and =
exam. The course will finish up in June.

If your interested please let me know. I will be handling John's =
registration for the rest of the month and can be reached at =
781-631-2417 or via email. Please pass this on in your Squadrons.

Regards,

Brian

Hi All:

Two years ago, I requested activation of the d18 list as a way for =
District 18 to provide an easy way to communicate information between =
meetings. Recently, Susan Schanning suggested that it could be used for =
"newbies". I see no conflict and would hope that a new member would ask =
questions since it is difficult to explain every detail without writing =
a book. My primary concern is that those who have signed on to the list =
get some benefit from it and remain members. =20

I suggest that the silent majority state their desires about the list =
content and any prohibitions and that we operate based on the wishes of =
the majority. =20

Lastly, I would welcome the opoportunity to turn this list over to a new =
member with the hope that they would develop the list futher and even =
consider creation of a separate "Newbie List". Would you be interested =
?

Jim Curran

To subscribers of the D18 Mailing List,

The Marblehead Sail & Power Squadron March newsletter (Head Lines) was
added to our web site yesterday. It is packed with articles and
stories about the Annual Meeting, awards presented and the fascinating
talk by Offshore magazine editor, Betsy Frawley Haggerty. Lots of
courses will begin in April. An Education Cruise is scheduled for June
14. The For Sale section has some nice surprises. And there's still
more...

I hope you can find some time to look at this "electronic" version;
all the photos are crisper as well as being in color. You can view it,
print all or some of it, and/or save it to your computer. The
newsletter is in the popular, universal format called PDF and all you
need is the Adobe Acrobat Reader, which can be obtained for FREE if
you don't already have it on your computer.

To view the newsletter, go to web site at
http://www.marblehead-usps.org When you get to the main page, click
on Newsletter in the menu to the left (sometimes called the nav bar)
to get the Newsletter page to view the current and/or past newsletter.
If you have any problems, please do not hesitant to call me
(781-631-2417) or send me an email message. I'd like to make this as
fun and easy as possible.

Enjoy!

Susan Schanning, S
Marblehead Sail & Power Squadron
Publications and Web Site

P.S. The newsletter can be quite large at times - almost a megabyte
of data. That's why I don't send the newsletter as an attachment. It
might fill up your mailbox and/ or it might take longer for you to
download if you are only using a 56K (or less) dialup modem.

Hi list ... answering "newbie questions" would give a
hint of their interests, I suppose ... but existing
'listers' dropping out is a good point. I enjoy the
announcements (Op Training, Ed Cruise, etc.). Last
year's threads on Joint COW and Spring Conference I
thought they were GREAT. This allowed discussion
without tying up the d18 Council meeting.

This was posted previously. I'm puttung it on again for new people on the
list and as a reminder. Dot Christopher, Merrimac River Sail and Power
Squadron

Operations Training

Operations Training is the class where all the workings of USPS are
explained. This year's class will be on Saturday Morning, April 6 from 8:30
to 12:30. Merrimac River will be hosting this District venture at the
Christopher's home in Andover. Dick Winskowicz will be the class presenter.
Dick, a member of the Beverly Squadron, is a Past Squadron and Past District
Commander. He has been active on the national level as a member and Past
Chairman of the Education Department's Cruise Planning Committee.
Operations Training is for everyone who has not taken it before or within
the last 3 years. It will be especially useful to all officers, committee
members and new members. Best of all, the course is free and goodies will be
served. There is always more to learn about our great organization. The
better we understand it, the stronger it will be.
To register, if you have questions or if you need directions, please call
Dick at 978-750-8848 or Dot at 978-475-5470. Please call by March 26 so
books can be ordered.

I believe that is why the authors of e-mail client software included a

Oh, great! Now we refer to new MEMBERS as 'newbies'? That's just what we
need to make them feel part of our squadrons!! I think the term 'newbies' is
very distasteful and degrading to those new MEMBERS we've convinced to join
us and then we go and make them feel as though they are in a class (a 'lower'
class, at that) by themselves and that we 'old salts' need a special name for
them other than MEMBERS. Come on, folks, let's get with it and make our new
MEMBERS feel welcome -- not isolated!

Ah yes.... Great question.... I was of the impression that they were one and
the same.... The meeting is scheduled for the Volunteer Yacht Club which I
am gathering by the tone of Barry's e-mail is NOT one and the same...
Please detail where the Volunteers are volunteering...

Bruce..

PS: that is where this meeting is happening....

The program could follow as we did in Taunton. Two simultaneous programs in
the morning 2+2 for a total of 4 in the morning and one hour of 2 programs
in the afternoon. Some could be duplicate (such as an IT program) to allow
for more to attend and the others could be singular to make the time work.
On that basis, we need two breakout rooms in addition to a large (everyone)
meeting room. The ladies program could occur in a sleeping room if need
be... We do need to find a location quickly. Perhaps the Jubilee Yacht club
or the Boston Yacht club might work (and at a good price). I am on a
business trip but would be happy to help as best I can.. Bruce..

Hi all ... Of the 4 responses, only 2 can attend on Tuesday, the 25th. So
I'll try for Tuesday, July 2nd at my house (1 Kenneth Rd, Mhead) at 7:30 PM
... seeing if MORE time results in more attendees.

The National Officer representing the Chief Commander at the 2 District
Conference in Chelmsford is: V/C Ernest (Ernie) G. Marshburn, SN from
Greenville, NC. He is the current National Administrative Officer. Very
straight forward, easy to talk to, down to earth guy. He is in line to
become Chief in about 3 more years.

Greetings All ...

Since it's 17 October and I've not received a flyer,
I thought that I would give you an electronic copy
(pdf) via a copy that I have on my server (color &
B/W) ... [you'll need a copy of Acrobat Reader ...
free>>>
http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
inorder to view/print it].

ALSO D/C Theirault emailed people the invite to the
Friday, 1 NOVEMBER dinner, I'll try to place a copy of
it (pdf) on my server also. USE this URL to get EITHER
or BOTH documents:

Hi:

Can anyone tell me if there will be a commander dinner on the evening of
Saturday, Nov 2 in conjunction with the Joint Conference? There is no
information that I can find about the conference (flyer, web site). It
was mentioned in the last D18 council meeting that there would be one at
the hotel. Am I correct that it has been canceled?

Note: I am not talking about the pre-conference dinnner on Friday
evening.

Regards,

Brian Schanning
Marblehead Sail & Power Squadron

P.S. As of yesterday, still haven't received conference flyer via snail
mail.
