[D28] Fires

We continue to be in one of the safe areas, although each morning you wake up and think things will be better, only to find out there are new fires. Right now our area and the Diehl's area are out of danger, but we will be watching the Palomar Mountain fire closely as that is the fire to the east that could blow this way as long as the winds continue in the westerly direction. The good new is that each day the winds are calmer than the day before so hopefully they will be able to get some control on these fires. The calmer winds have also allowed for helicopters and planes to help fight the fires.
Thank you all for your concern. We will keep in touch.

I received the following replies from Lou Cook and Van Diehl on the fires. The offer of assistance still stands.

From Lou Cook, 5:10 PM Tuesday, October 23, 2007

WISH WE COULD FURNISH HOUSING, BUT WE ARE STILL TORN UP FROM WATER DAMAGE. WE WERE WARNED NOT TO GO OUTSIDE IF ONE IS PREGNANT, OR HAVE LUNG PROBLEMS. THE FIRE HAS FLARED UP TO THE EAST OF US. MANY ARE WITHOUT POWER. EVERYONE HAS BEEN ASKED TO CONSERVE ENERGY. DOES NOT LOOK GOOD FOR THE GARDENS WE VISITED WHILE IN CARLSBAD.

  GLORIA AND LOU COOK

From Van Diehl, 7:36 PM, Tuesday, October 23, 2007

The Diehls thank the commandr and friend Bill Johnson for his concern about how this horrible disaster affecting all of us. We, in south Carlsbad, were notified yesterday morning that we should do a voluntary evacuation. We attended a scheduled excom mtg at Adriaan's house and spent the night there. Our area was engulfed in smoke, the sun was a red ring, and falling ashes, but the nearest fire was in Olivenhain and Rancho Santa Fe several miles away. There were no embers flying anywhere near us.

To avoid the smoke we are now in our boat and will stay here until the smoke will clear. The Santa Ana winds are dying down and just now here the wind is coming from NW, what should help the fight against the fire.

  Thank you again,

  Van and Cida

Please keep everyone appraised of your situation.
