The Squadron Officers and General Members Session at the Portland Governing Board will be held on Thursday, September 8, 2005 from 1400 to 1730 in the Pavilion Ballroom West. Two important topics will be discussed by those attending. We hope to accomplish the following at the session:
n The two items we want discussed today that have been selected will provide the OCom, D/Cs and other National and District Officers with specific ideas on how to make these structural improvements to help Squadrons increase membership.
n In your discussions, you should focus on specifics.
How to implement these changes
- What things in USPS need to be changed to implement the idea?
- Who needs to do what to make "It" happen?
- What should the timetable be for implementing the change?
n We're going to break-up the discussion of each change into two parts: First - A table discussion and second - Open discussion. Each table should keep its own notes for us and we'll have an "Open Discussion" recorder. You'll get both sets of notes as in the past.
The topics are:
1. By a By-laws change, formally make the Squadron Membership Chair an ex officio member of the Squadron's Executive Committee. Their job (and the first item on the agenda) would be to give the EXCom a short bio of each new member, and a member of the Bridge would take the responsibility to get each new member into a squadron job.
a. National should develop a list of jobs for each National Committee for new members (short duration, meaningful and where they will meet other Squadron members).
b. Give the new member a list of jobs from which they choose how they'll serve the squadron.
c.. The Squadron should give those who join a "New Member" packet at the graduation of the boating course. Also give them a squadron roster and a list of "Who to call for what" list.
d. National: Prepare a "Welcome to USPS" brochure. Publish squadron success stories.
2. Districts should have a "SWAT Team" available to help Squadrons with their training - the Squadron provides the place, people and refreshments. The District provides the trainers. Use the P/Cs and P/D/Cs in this function -- Help Squadrons find out what works for them
