D31's Spring Conference is weekend of March 15. As Membership Chair, I need
the Membership Report of 28 February as the basis for number of delegates
from each squadron and also want to make a membership report.

I tried to download the monthly report from the member's web site this
morning and usually go to Membership Committee first, then on to the report
but the Committees link is unavailable. I suspect it is due to changing the
site this past weekend.

Have you heard anything from ITCom when it will be available?

Have no idea when the new page will be available to committees. For now put
the following address in your browser:

    www.usps.org/national/membership

The Feb stat report is available. Access it from the above site or direct at:

    www.usps.org/national/hq/feb02stat.html

FYI,

Here is a neat recongition program from D6. Maybe Lyle can get more info
about it and report it back to the committee. If warrented maybe the
committee should work with D6 in promoting it.

What do you think Lyle?

Ahoy,

28 Feb 02 National Membership Report is now on the web, linked from our
committee web site. Follow link to "Monthly Reports." You may need to put the
URL (address) in your browser's to get to the site. The National page
"Committees" was not finished as of yesterday. So if needed, it's :

        htt://www.usps.org/national/membership

Recruiting is still off the pace set last year. New Actives this year, 312 VS
last year 355. But Feb 02 is an improvement over Jan 02 VS Jan 01. So let's
keep the folks motivated because the trend is in the right direction.
Improving numbers is important.

There are 7 Districts growing YTD. They are D8, 10, 14, 18, 22, 27, and 33.
Can we gleam anything from these districts? Maybe the committee member
assigned to them can take a look and see if there's anything to be learned
why they are growing YTD and others NOT?

I know our losses were pretty high back in July, but let's focus our fellow
squadron and district memcomchs on the positive and thank them for the hard
fought gains they ARE achieving.

Thanks for your hard work too ;-)

Ahoy,

Bruce

Ahoy,

If you haven't visited the "Members" USPS web site lately, you should check
it out.

    http://www.usps.org/member

The left hand frame has links to various other pages. The link "Committees"
goes to a page which is still under construction. But, you can link on
"National" and follow links to "Department" IE Executive or Administrative
and the committes will show up and linked to their respective site.

The new Members site really looks great. Check it out.

Any way of recognizing merit is good. In D-11 we have always given a senior
member plaque to a person earning 5 marks. Recently, with the District
bridge, we began giving "hang on" plaques after 10, 15 or 20 marks are
received.

Our only problem is that not every squadron bought into it, but at least it
is now a District sanctioned practice.

Ahoy,

Recently, HQ sent out a revised (2/2002) "Dues And Fee Schedule" to squadron
treasurers. It was slightly different from the one available from our web
site. It caused some confusion based on emails I recently received.

FYI, I ask HQ to send a computer file of the revised form and have since
updated the web copy. It is now current and the same one mailed out.

I would like 2 or 3 volunteers to head up a project that would offer a dues
and fees schedule easier to understand? Or at the very least, discuss what
should / could be done to improve it. Let me know if you have an interest in
this project.

This could be a topic for the closed meeting in Houston.

Ahoy,

I've made changes on getting to the monthly and historical reports. I should
be easier to find them.

Go to the home page and check it out. Let me know if there is something else
you'd like to see.

Ahoy,

I attended the Spring Conference for D32 and had a wonderful time as always.
It was fun to share their conference and visit fellow committee member Bev
Kennedy.

Some notes I want to pass along:

    1. Commanders report, one mentioned "members are dropping because we are
not giving them anything they are interested in. "

I sure hope this isn't an education or lack of problem? Squadron must deliver
after the sale, "Join Because, because, because, then don't deliver" ? This
is probably a bigger problem than we want to admit. This is a problem of
"burnout!" This is solved by recruiting new members and asking them to be
evolved.

    2. Publish "Mintues" in newsletter. This would help members better
realize there is a business side to the squadron too. And their help is
needed.

    3. One squadron uses their FUSA dollars to issue "Scholarships for
Seamanship" which give each new member a free Seamanship manual when they
join. They are given the place, time, and date when the class starts. They
are getting good recruiting results with this program. "Beaverton Power
Squadron" I've ask this squadron for a write up to share with others.

    4. Bobbi Shaw, Beaverton PS, addressed the meeting with the following
idea, "Retention is a legacy to the squadron." I nice saying, a great idea
and worth expanding into a promotional program possibly. I've passed it on
the MI group.

Last but not least, we have two new members to the committee. I will be
posting their data shortly, welcome to our committee:

D/C Ron Lukens, AP (D17), Knoxville, TN
D/Lt Kay Allen, S (D8), Ft Lauderdale, FL

This means I will be working on assignments, again, and will post when
completed. More about these two dynamic squadron members later, please join
me in welcoming them ABOARD ;-)

Bruce

Ahoy,

Thanks to Earl Rose, the squadrons and districts that were recognized at
their fall conference for meeting or exceeding the National Growth of 3% is
now on the web.

Check it out. I noticed several districts had not a single squadron on the
list?

As we discussed in our last closed meeting, this year each squadron and
district that does have growth, but not 3 %, will get a letter congratulating
them and to motivate them to continue their efforts.

This way all squadron and district with growth will be recognized. BUT, I'm
wondering if there will be ANY? This list will be far shorter this year,
unless some heavy duty recruiting and / or retention takes place.

We have our jobs cut out for us, that's for sure!

Ahoy,

Ernie has a great idea and needs our help and input. Please read the messages
below to get an idea of what is needed, that is "tidbits" about recruiting.

Please submit your ideas to me. I will compile them and put them in the pool.
MI and Youth will also submit "tidbits" for the pool.

Read the example below and send me some ideas. I know you are full of ideas!

Recruiting/Retention” tidbits. The format for this is outlined in the
attached spreadsheet but basically what we would be looking for is a
series of quick tidbits followed by more extensive information. The
tidbits should be limited to a short sentence and the additional
information should be no longer than a paragraph. Moreover, the “total
concept” for the tidbit must be completely described within the
additional information, i.e. paragraph. No referencing of other
information will be allowed except for the inclusion of a URL. However,
the primary objective is to make these tidbits short, stand alone, and

For the benefit of the new members and us more veterans let's review the
monthly reporting scheduling.

Time continues with many things going on. Individual monthly activity reports
are due by the 10th of the month and are sent to me. Each committee member is
to file a report even if there is nothing to report. Martha sent one this
month. Thank you. At least I heard from her. I compile all your reports and
send them to Frank McHugh, R/C of our committee. Frank then reports to Ernie
regards any matter that should be discussed at a pending OCom meeting. Email
works best. My email address is : sailplay@aol.com

Conference reports go directly to Frank. When attending a conference please
file a report regards membership activities that took place. Questions,
ideas, etc. that came up. Remember, we are always looking for great
ideas/programs to share nationally. If attending a conference other than your
own district, you should first make an inquiry to the D/C to advise them
you'd like to attend. Offer any help on behalf of our committee to the D/C to
help make the conference a success. Brochures, forms, etc..

All our members are on email and our email list.

Remember, the email list address is: memcom@usps.org

When you send a message to this address, everyone on the committee receives
it, including our department head, V/C Ernie Marshburn. It's a closed list
and only members of the committee are members of this list. I handle the
administration of the list so I know who is on it. Only members of the list
can post emails to it, all others get bounced to me and I then decide if it
should be allowed for our group or not.

Spring is upon us, Finally! Many conferences, district and squadron change of
watches will be taking place. I will be asking HQ staff to compile a new list
of district membership chairs sometime in the near future. Possibly early
May. This way the list that is on our web site will be current.

If you have any questions, my phone number is : 425-348-0739, Cell
253-988-4333, and of course you have my email address as well.

We have our work cut out for us, membership numbers are down across the board
ytd. But with your help, we can and should make growing USPS FUN. Job one,
let's make it FUN ;-) Ahoy, see you in Houston,

Bruce

Just a reminder regards "Tid Bits" ....................Don't worry about the
posted deadline, post to memcom@usps.org your
ideas.......................Bruce

<sip>
Let’s see if your troops are up to a challenge :-) The
challenge is to come up with a series of “USPS Membership
Recruiting/Retention” tidbits. The format for this is outlined in the
attached spreadsheet but basically what we would be looking for is a
series of quick tidbits followed by more extensive information. The
tidbits should be limited to a short sentence and the additional
information should be no longer than a paragraph. Moreover, the “total
concept” for the tidbit must be completely described within the
additional information, i.e. paragraph. No referencing of other
information will be allowed except for the inclusion of a URL. However,
the primary objective is to make these tidbits short, stand alone, and
self-contained. To help explain the concept, launch the attached
Powerpoint presentation and run it. It contains a series of science
facts followed by additional information that I cut and pasted together.
However, this is an example of what I have in mind. Once the first
Powerpoint screen is displayed, you can click on the (read more) button,
actually anywhere on the screen, to see the impact of the additional
pop-up information. Successive clicks take you thought the other
science facts.

If your committee is up to this challenge, I would like to ask if each
Membership team would be willing to come up with 10-15 membership
tidbits + the additional information that is specifically related to
their respective teams. The goal would be to collect three sets, each
dealing with a subset of your committee, i.e. membership, membership
involvement, and youth activities. Collectively, we would then want to
merge all team suggestions into a common spreadsheet and then select the
top 25. For the moment, I will leave to your imagination how we would
propose to use this information but rest assured that the Membership and
Member Involvement Committee would have a lot of front page space as a
result.

If you choose to accept this challenge, the proposed deadline for
generating the 10-15 tidbits would be 29 March with the selection of the
top 25 by 5 April. I would also request that each of us are cc’d on any
submissions to help each of us cut down on duplication of effort should
more than one person come up with the same tidbit concept. I would also
propose that you, Roberta, Laura, Bruce, and I serve as the Selection
Committee (again, assuming that your committee chooses to accept this
challenge). This could be a fun project and it may turn out to be the
kind of “out-of-the-box” tool that will make a difference where USPS
membership is concerned. It would also serve as another way to help us
promote and proactively demonstrate that the focus of our administration
is “membership”.

Ok, enough chatter. The four of you need to put your heads together and
determine if your schedules and current projects would permit you to
engage in this proposed one. Also, it’s ok if you choose not to accept
the mission. Let me know what you think.

Ernie

Hey Everyone,

Here are some "Tid Bits" for V/C Marshburn's project he challenged us with
recently. Remember? Use the following as ideas and see what you can come up
with. Since V/C Marshburn is on this list, send them to the list and he will
receive them too;-)

GO FOR IT - JUST DO IT .........................Bruce

1. Tid Bit:
Enthusiam Highlights "FUN

MORE
The most important thing is making the students in our public classes feel
like you are having such a great time with USPS that they will miss out if
they don’t join.

2. Tid Bit
USPS Save Lives

MORE
According to the U.S. Coast Guard, a boater without "Safe Boating Education"
is 5 times more likely to die on the water.

3. Tid Bit
Recruiting is about being "Personal."

MORE
Squadron’s experience incredibly successful recruiting with the personal
contact. 15-20 members attending and helping out at public classes results in
many students signing up to join.

4. Tid Bit
Media Blitz Equals Squadron Growth

MORE
Doing a media blitz 6 weeks before a public class attracts students to
classes. Large classes adds many safer boaters to local waters. One squadron
signed up 50 new members in one year by teaching over 500 students safe
boating.
--------------------------

How about the rest of the committee's members. Any suggested "Tid Bits?"

Hi All!
It is time to start thinking about when you want to work at the booths
in Houston. I will need EVERY MEMBER OF ALL THREE COMMITTEES TO VOLUNTEER
FOR SOME TIME. Roberta and Laura and Bruce---please forward this mailing on
to your committee people. I want to make sure that everyone reads this
message.

We will all have to take a turn during our meetings. If Youth activites is
meeting then someone from Membership recruit. or involv. will work at the
table, etc.

Laura-Since we are all one big committee this year, how do you want the First
timers table run? I think we should all volunteer for a time at each table.
For instance, if you work the membership table on Thursday, you will work the
First Timers' table on Fri. OK?

We need workers from 0800 to 1700 on Thursday (one or two workers each hour
at each table.)
Hours on Friday are 0800 to 1600 (one or two workers each hour at each
table.) If our tables are side by side we could possible combine our efforts
and it might make everyone's job easier.

I will work the table from 0800 to 0900 each morning.

REMEMBER, THE EARLY BIRD GETS HIS CHOICE OF TIMES. IF WE DON'T HEAR FROM
EACH MEMBER, THEN THAT MEMBER WILL BE ASSIGNED A TIME AND IT WILL BE THAT
MEMBER'S RESPONSIBLITY TO FIND A SUBSITUTE WORKER.

Hi Everyone!
I have been informed that Steve Johnson is setting up the First Timers
table. Everyone on the subcommittee of Membership involvement should sign up
with him, not me. Those people already committed to the First Timers table
will stay where they are. All new ones go through Steve at: scj2@flash.net
I am only responsible for the membership table. If you are on the
membership recruiting committee and or the Youth activities committee, please
volunteer for the membership table. (Those members who have already
volunteered disregard this.)
If you think I was too curt in soliciting volunteers, my apologies. I
find that it is very difficult to recruit volunteers ahead of time for the
table and have everything in place when we arrive. If it is done ahead, then
we all know our schedules and can plan accordingly.

Hi Everyone,

Carolyn is doing a good job of scheduling members for table assignments in
Houston for the Spring Governing Board. Please contact her ASAP.

Additionally, we also help man the "First Timers" table which the OLD Member
Involvement Committee. This committee is now part of the Membership
Committees and we ALL should work as a TEAM and volunteer to man both tables.
ALL applies to Recruiting, Involvement, and Youth. You are all welcomed and
needed to help assure the success of these tables.

It truely is a TEAM effort. Many meetings, different time schedules, means
many volunteers are necessary to cover both tables during the operating
hours. This is important.

Please volunteer some of your time to both tables.

At this time, please contact Carolyn Knaggs for the Membership Table, and
Steve Johnson for the Frist Timers Table.

Laura - How long do you feel your open meeting will take? I only need about
35 minutes for an Open meeting so I could tag on to the end of your meeting.
Think about all of us shortening our Open Meetings to about 1/2 hour each in
the future. 1.5 hours total would be enough "rear" tolerance for most
sitting adults.

Dear NSBC Board and others:

As you may be aware the "Boating Safety Sidekicks" web site home page has a
new theme every month. If you haven't checked out the this month's site
when you get a chance please do so. It is called "April Fool's Find". Kid's
love this stuff. Thanks goes to our "sidekicks" graphic Director Ted Walke
for keeping the "sidekicks" as a changing interactive site.
http://www.boatingsidekicks.com/

Other news - please know that the "Boating Safety Sidekicks" Go Fishing
publication has been completed and over 455,000 have been purchased by our
friends at RBFF for distribution during National Boating and Fishing Week
at their special awareness promotion with Wal-Mart. It is a super
publication and addresses a higher age level than the first original
edition. It focuses on basic fishing knowledge as well as addressing some
safety concerns. Every Sidekick's character is always in a life jacket.

I believe we are ready to go into production with "Boating Safety
Sidekicks" action figures. I will be contacting "Mattel" later today.

April Fools on my last sentence but do check out the "Sidekicks" web site
each month for a new theme and inactive pages.

Respectfully,
Virgil

Hi Wayne,

There is no age requirement to join as a "Junior Family Member." See Section
22.17 of the operations manual revised 9/23/01

NOTE: The use of "Junior" is for dues category purposes only. "Family
Membership" includes both Adult and Junior.

Yes, a "Family Member" can earn a "Family Merit Mark." This includes both
Adult and Junior Family members as noted above. See Section 16.1 of the
operations manual revised 9/23/01.

You can check out the latest version of the "Operations Manual" and "Bylaws"

Commander, thank you very much for your question.

Family Membership truly does make us a "National Family Boating

Keeping a member, in other words assuring the member renews and stays a
member takes a TEAM. Takes a Squadron.

Each department has an important roll to play. Education, Executive, and
Administrative all contribute to "Service After the Sale." In other words,
"It Takes a Squadron."

TEAM = Involvement = meeting new members expectations. Classes to take or
help proctor, FUN and Informative Meetings, civic service all add up to
"Service After the Sale." OR "Meeting members expectations attracts and keeps
members involved and improves RETENTION."

MI has put some very interesting graphs on their web site. 5 year membership
trends. I think we could put them to use.

Use this hot link to go there <A
HREF="http://usps.org/national/meminv/district_membership_graphs.htm">
District Membership Graphs</A> OR if it does not work here is the web
address: http://usps.org/national/meminv/district_membership_graphs.htm
and or follow the links to "Membership Reports" from the Membership Home Page.

Would you do a little task for me? I feel there are some nuggets in these
graphs. What am I referring too? Squadrons / districts with continuous growth
over a 5 year period. Are there any in your assigned districts? Please take a
look. Go to the above web site and look up your districts and then squadrons.

Report back to me any and all that have up sloping trend lines over the last
5 years. We want to ID who these squadrons / district are? Why? They could
contain some UN-mined nuggets of gold, gold in them there hills! Gold like
"Membership Growth."

Let's check them out and see what our prospecting discovers!

I feel we should look at these nuggets closely and possibly recognize them
with a letter from the committee signed by the Rear or possibly the V/C.......

Anxiously awaiting your prospecting reports!

Bruce :-)

Ahoy Ye Scalawags,

Some committee members are assigned the wonderful experience of writing an
article for The Ensign on behalf of the committees. If you are one , then
check out the guidelines recommended by The Ensign staff by following the
link on the "Assignments 2002" page. Go to: (try clicking on the hot link
below)

they are doing that contributes to successive growth over a 5 year period?

squadrons to do real member retention and member involvement work all year

What do the Membership Committees members think on this issue?

Bruce,

I agree with the observation in his last sentence. With the present arrangement, a
typical squadron might have to chase after 36 non or late renewals, whereas, if
spread out over the course of a whole year, on a monthly basis, the squadron may
only have to deal on average, with three members at a time.

Of course there are a host of other considerations that would have to be
addressed. It will be interesting to hear comments from our committee members.

Ahoy,

Thanks to San Carlos Bay Sail and Power Squadron and Peter Block for creating
and allowing their great "power point" presentation to be used by all
squadrons and now available for download on the Nat'l Membership - Recruiting
web site.

Check it out.

Go to: www.usps.org/national/membership

The link is found at the top of the page.

Peter was invited to present his program but is not avaiable. Too bad too,
it's a great looking presentation.

Bruce
