=A0
Lyle Millan received the following email:
=A0
=B3I also have to wonder, when did "America's Boating Club" become our aka
name?=A0 We have been known for 90 years as The United States Power Squadrons
and now "America's Boating Club"!=A0 Give it some thought - I have been a
member since '92 and have earned my merit mark each year (and enjoyed my
organization).=A0 But I didn't join "America's Boating Club".
Now I am about ready to throw in the towel because I just don't care for th=
e
direction my USPS organization is heading.=A0 It isn't just me, I am hearing
this comment more and more from members in other squadrons.=A0 Maybe you can
carry my thoughts back for discussion and help bring us back on course.=A0 I
hope so because I really would not like to abandon this ship.

=A0
Here is my reply to Lyle and Betty:
=A0
Lyle,
=A0
Let Betty know I sincerely appreciate her comments.
=A0
I would hope she stays involved=A0and helps guide the changes facing
our=A0organization.
=A0
A couple of observations. "America's Boating Club" is a tag line. Just like
"Sail and Power Boating"=A0which has been used over twenty years. Either can
be used or not. Depending on purpose either can be used. It's a marketing
tag.
=A0
America's Boating Club came about because of "ABC," America's Boating
Course.=A0USPS wanted to tag the name "America's Boating Club" with "America'=
s
Boating Course." Its seems to be a natural tie in with promotional material=
s
in mind.
=A0
With the advent of NASBLA and states making education mandatory, there are
many more competitors providing basic safe boating information to meet the
increase in demand. USCGAux or USPS could not possibly meet this demand, my
opinion, there fore USPS finds a new environment in which to operate the
organization's mission, safe boating through education. But here is the
silver lining, USPS is considering up grading the basic course to offer
serious boaters more for their educational dollar. This could present our
superior educational opportunity and possibly attracting the kind of member
we are always looking to recruit.
=A0
Now this is=A0only an idea=A0at this stage but I hope it gives Betty a feeling
of confidence that USPS is working to maintain our leadership role as the
premiere boating educational organization USPS has been and will remain.
=A0
But let her know we need her help to continue our voyage. It takes members
like her that are dedicated, concerned about our future=A0and a leader.=A0
=A0
Thanks again for sharing Betty's concerns.

Greeting to all: It is not even the holiday season and joy is in the wind.
I have had two calls from and made one to a Bridge members today. I do not
know who is the most excited, Bruce, the Chief or me. Thanks to each and
everyone for all of your efforts. For icing on the cake, if possible, coul=
d
you use the rest of the month in your own Squadron helping their Bridge
contact each non-renewing member and tell them about the many benefits and
values of being a member and besides, where else can they be with such nea=

people. Thank you,=20

Hi Everyone:=20

One month and 2 days and we will be having fun in Jacksonville. Your Team
Leaders are working hard to help make this a great meeting.
Donna Dunlap and Ed White (1st Timers Table) and Carolyn Knaggs (Membership
Table) need your help to 'man' these tables. If EVERYONE on our Committee
offered just 1 hour of their time to meet and greet folks at these tables,
we would be over staffed. It is a fun activity as you meet and welcome
members from your own District and Squadron.

Come on Gals and Guys contact these hard working Team Leaders today and
offer to help at the tables. This is a working National membership
Committee, we cannot afford to have anyone who is just a name on the roster=
,
we need your help.

Thanks in advance for your cooperation.

Non Renewal Survey

Thanks to all the NMRs who are still working on their reports. Many of you
reported it was difficult to obtain complete reports as it is the height o=
f
boating/vacation season, so Drew continues to receive reports. Keep up the
good work, all data is important for a comprehensive final report.

We have received several comments and recommendations regarding revising th=
e
survey form and will be working to make improvements for Spring 2005. Pleas=
e
bring your suggestions to our closed meeting in Jacksonville, Thursday 9
September, 0800-1200, City Terrace 7 room.

A Few Tips On Recruiting

=B7 Use every available method to advertise your Boating Course,
including word of mouth. Encourage every member to tell a friend,
neighbor, boating buddy =8A=8A=8A.Power of One!

=B7 Present several Public Courses per year. The old Spring and Fall is
pass=E9. Some Squadrons present a Boating Course every month
                with great results!

=B7 We have to present a package that that they want to buy. Oh yes, we
ARE selling.

=B7 You must believe in your product and be enthusiastic in your
approach. Don=B9t forget to tell your face that you ARE enthusiastic.

=B7 Throughout the Boating Course reference other courses where more
in-depth information is covered.. Refer to =8CTen Hot Tips=B9.

=B7 At the end of your first session, distribute the folder =8CThis is
USPS=B9 to all students giving them time to think about joining USPS.

=B7 Interviewing=8A=8A..More is better, but no less than 1 Interviewer for
every 8 students.

=B7 Have Bridge members and Exec Committee members present on graduation
night to answer questions.

=B7 A Congratulatory/Welcome letter from the Commander to every new
member can have a distinct bearing on the new member=B9s attitude towards the
squadron.=20
=20

Did You Know

1. Due to the popularity of the first, First Timers Orientation Meeting in
Pittsburgh, there will be TWO 1st Timers meetings scheduled in Jacksonville=
.
One on Thursday (1300-1400) and the second on Friday (0930-1030). Both
Orientation meetings will be presented in City Terrace 12 room. If anyone i=
n
your squadron will be a 1st Timer in Jax, please pass on the news.

    2. New Memcom1 forms are available at HQ. Pitch out the old and start
using the new form that has a space for the name of the
person who most influenced you in joining USPS=B9

    3. The members name who =8Cmost influenced=B9 must be on the Memcom1 alon=
g
with the certificate # in order for that person to
receive credit towards Power of One awards.

    4. Sea Tow has included the USPS application form in their mail out o=
f
10,000.=20
=20

One More Time

It=B9s August and some members are just returning from vacation. That may be
the reason you could not reach that non renewal. Now is the time to try
again. Ask every member of your Bridge and every member of your Exec
Committee to make ONE telephone call to a non renewing member. If every
Squadron =8Cbrought back=B9 just 3 members=8A=8A..well, you do the math and you wil=
l
find the number pretty impressive as a total for USPS.

We are depending on every Squadron to try ONE MORE TIME.
Thanks for your help.
=20
Looking forward to seeing all your smiling faces in Jacksonville,

Power Of One, an exciting new membership program, is, hopefully, starting t=

s
was performed comparing membership numbers as of 30 September 2003 [progra=

start] and 31 May 2004, which for most squadrons, represents the high point
in their membership numbers. Following are the results:
=20

   6 to 10 10
 11 to 15 12
 16 to 20 6

   26 to 30 1

Through 31 May, one squadron has the numbers to qualify for the "Grand
Squadron Challenge" and 37 squadrons have met the target numbers to qualify
for the "Elite Squadron Challenge". Of course, meeting the numbers target
doesn't automatically put a squadron in the win column. The rules also stat=
e
that, "A prerequisite of award consideration is that the Squadron must show
positive membership growth for the year in which the award is given". We
will be closely checking the 30 September, 2004 numbers to ensure that the
above 38 squadrons had adequate retention numbers to maintain positive
growth.
=20
On the individual side of the equation, until 31 July, 1,093 individuals
have earned the right to receive the special POO pin for having influenced
at least 1 new member to join. 26 have earned a POO cap for having
influenced 5 or more new members and 2 have earned the POO jacket for
influencing 10 or more. One individual has qualified for the prestigious
"Admiral's Club".
=20
One disconcerting element lies in the fact that although there are
individual pin winners in all 33 Districts, the winners have come from only
208 squadrons. This, unfortunately, means that less than 50% of our
squadrons are participating. What a great year we can have ahead of us if w=
e
can get everyone aboard the POO train.

Through 31 May, one squadron has the numbers to qualify for the &quot;Grand=
Squadron Challenge&quot; and 37 squadrons have met the target numbers to qu=
alify for the &quot;Elite Squadron Challenge&quot;. Of course, meeting the n=
umbers target doesn't automatically put a squadron in the win column. The ru=
les also state that, &quot;A prerequisite of award consideration is that the=
Squadron must show positive membership growth for the year in which the awa=
rd is given&quot;. We will be closely checking the 30 September, 2004 number=
s to ensure that the above 38 squadrons had adequate retention numbers to ma=
intain positive growth.<BR>
&nbsp;<BR>
On the individual side of the equation, until 31 July, 1,093 individuals ha=
ve earned the right to receive the special POO pin for having influenced at =
least 1 new member to join. 26 have earned a POO cap for having influenced 5=
or more new members and 2 have earned the POO jacket for influencing 10 or =
more. One individual has qualified for the prestigious &quot;Admiral's Club&=
quot;.<BR>
&nbsp;<BR>
One disconcerting element lies in the fact that although there are individu=
al pin winners in all 33 Districts, the winners have come from only 208 squa=
drons. This, unfortunately, means that less than 50% of our squadrons are pa=
rticipating. What a great year we can have ahead of us if we can get everyon=
