In followup to my first email, let me expand upon some of the possible
benefits (and dreams):

1. Even in its first year, it is not out of the realm of possibility to offer
"free" membership dues for the new members first full year (we can do that
now with anniversary billing)...certainly in the second year. I am not
suggesting to do away with the membership exam requirement. Who says we cannot have
100,000 or more members?

2. The life members can continue their membership benefit without any sort of
involuntary donation.

3. The Operating Committee can help offset some of the members luncheon cost
if not the saturday evening function.
Lunch at $5 sounds like a good idea to me.

4. At some point in the future, we will have secured the financial picture
of USPS.

There are many other possibilities but let me add one other benefit that most
of us don't see...removing (or at least alleviating) the constant financial
pressure on the Operating Committee. This is not to say that good management
does not require good fiscal management. The OCom and everyone else can
concentrate their best efforts on getting and retaining new members and getting our
new members taking our educational courses.

Dear fellow members,

As a former 9-year member of the national planning committee, I pondered over
the financial condition of USPS on many occasions.

Each previous national dues increase was a direct result of dire need...the
governing board members recognized such and rendered their approval.

One doesn't cure cancer by taking aspirin and one doesn't cure long-term
financial needs by taking insignificant measures. USPS has reduced its operating
expenses down to the bone, which includes going from three to two national
meetings per year beginning in 2006. Although these measures have stemmed the flow
of red ink, they haven 't and won't reverse the trend.

What is needed is a dues increase...a substantial one over a period of
time...and the initiative for such generated at the squadron/district level.

I would propose a $2 increase every other year for 5 times, i.e., a total of
$10 over 10 years. At the end of 10 years, this would generate approx $500,000
annually. There isn't one of us that cannot afford this added yearly expense.

Some would argue that this is too much and I wouldn't argue against that
except that we cannot predict the future with any certainty. If nothing else, we
can build up a cash reserve with those excess dollars and perhaps even
reestablish some of the lost benefits to our members serving at the national level,
like expense reimbursement.
