Thursday, 2 Sept 2004 - Update
R/C Howard Yoas (National Meetings Committee) arrived in Jacksonville, FL=20
today and immediately initiated communications with Adams Mark Hotel and=20
Jacksonville Emergency Services personnel. At the present time, there are n=
o plan to=20
evacuate the area, except along the beaches and other flood prone areas. Th=
e=20
airport has not made a decision about closing due to weather but will closel=
y=20
evaluate conditions and make appropriate decisions on a day by day basis.
It should be noted that Jacksonville Airport management does not cancel=20
flights, rather that is the prerogative of individual carriers. Meeting att=
endees=20
are encouraged to check with their airline carrier regarding flight schedule=
s=20
into Jacksonville before departing from home. Some airlines are canceling o=
r=20
rerouting flights into Jacksonville at this time but return to a normal=20
operating schedule is anticipated after the storm passes the area.
The Adam=E2=80=99s Mark indicates that if any attendees are interested in ar=
riving=20
early, they will be offered a room rate of $79/night (the evacuation rate sh=
ould=20
be requested) until their reservation date; then rates will convert to the=20
USPS rate. As local evacuees are moving into the hotel during the evacuatio=
n=20
period, interested attendees are encouraged to make advanced reservations be=
fore=20
leaving home.
At this time, neither hurricane warnings nor watches have been posted for=20
Jacksonville area and Jacksonville Emergency Services are anticipating that=20=
the=20
storm will no longer be a threat to the Jacksonville area after Sunday. The=
=20
current official storm track by the National Hurricane Center predicts that=20=
the=20
storm will pass west of Jacksonville and that the resulting impact on the=20
Jacksonville area will be minimal.
Howard can be reached at the Adams Mark Hotel at 904-633-9095, room 1862 or=20
by email at hyoas@flash.net should you need to contact him.
