Thank you for the information and following up with me. I have passed this
information to our executive board. However, I still think that by requiring the
test first, prior to joining the squadron, is putting the cart before the
horse. We need to make the class available to the public and we are doing this.
But, Only a small percentage of the people taking the boat smart class are
joining the squadron. I would not have any problem telling a member that they need
to pass the test within 12 months or forfeit their membership. The way it is
currently set up it seems kind of elitist and turns some people off. I think
that if they get to know us and why we think these classes are so important
they would not have any trouble meeting the requirement to pass the test within
12 months of joining. Meanwhile, they have become members and that membership
becomes important to them.

I will try to get our board to bring copies of the test and the boat smart
manual to the general membership meetings and arranging to offer the test
perhaps after the general membership meeting if the student does not need to go
through the class. I think that will help, but I hope that you will think about
how my suggestion will work rather than what the down side is to it. It seems
that we need to continue to look for ways to streamline the process to appeal to
a broader group of people. I joined 20 years ago to learn how to navigate and
somewhere along the line I decided that I liked to be around people who boat
safely and want to further their boating education. I was transferred to
Kentucky from Atlanta, GA and was out of boating for several years and then when I
got back into boating I had trouble even finding a local squadron.

Sincerely,

Pete Peterson
OK committee, is it time we, membership committee, recommend what Pete
suggests?

Let folks join without passing an exam, but, requiring they pass an approved
exam within 1 year or other time frame. "Seamanship" would be My preferred
approved exam.

I need, require your input, please.

Remember, USPS is made up of many differenet types of boating areas. Coastal,
inland rivers and lakes, and oceans.

My opinion, a member of USPS is a better boater or potential than those not a
member. Let's get them in and then help them train to become an improved,
confident skipper.
