I certainly have no problem with the suggestion. I became a member without passing a boating course. It so happens that in 1983 USPS in New Jersey was not permitted to offer the boating course because of the litigation involving the court case brought on by a woman who had passed the boating course and requested membership in USPS. At that time membership was restricted to men only. 

As it turns out, I was interested in increasing my boating knowledge and enrolled in the Seamanship Course within the first year of my membership. I became very interested in the organization and went on to be Squadron Commander, District Commander and Rear Commander.

I offer this information as a positive example of accepting a new member without the individual passing a boating course.

I was transferred to Kentucky from Atlanta, GA and was out of boating for several years and then when I got back into boating I had trouble even finding a local squadron.

OK committee, is it time we, membership committee, recommend what Pete suggests? 

Let folks join without passing an exam, but, requiring they pass an approved exam within 1 year or other time frame. "Seamanship" would be My preferred approved exam.

I need, require your input, please.

Remember, USPS is made up of many differenet types of boating areas. Coastal, inland rivers and lakes, and oceans. 

My opinion, a member of USPS is a better boater or potential than those not a member. Let's get them in and then help them train to become an improved, confident skipper.
