Now Accepting 2006 Boating Safety Grant Applications
The BoatU.S. Foundation Boating Safety Grant Program deadline is =
just a month away, but it's not too late to apply for funding for your =
organization's project idea. Grants are open to small, local nonprofit =
groups and organizations, and are a unique way to increase safe boating =
practices around the country. The deadline to apply is November 1, 2005.
Over the past 15 years, the Foundation has awarded over $615,000 =
in Boating Safety Grant funds to develop innovative projects that =
promote safe boating on local waterways. Topics have ranged from =
creating literature on the effects of boating under the influence to =
boat ramp signage informing users about free vessel safety checks. =
Interested groups can request up to $4,000 for eligible projects.=20
Grant guidelines, information, and applications are available =
online-just click here. The grants will be awarded in late January 2006.
Foundation Staff Makes a Splash with Crew Overboard Tests
In August, as part of the Foundation Findings research and =
testing series, BoatU.S. Foundation staff members headed to San =
Francisco, CA, to participate in the 2005 Crew Overboard Retrieval =
Symposium, a national event conducted to test crew overboard emergency =
gear. The week on San Francisco Bay involved 110 people, with volunteers =
going overboard to test the effectiveness of new crew overboard recovery =
gear and to explore the particular challenges of getting crew back =
aboard. The tests involved sailboats, powerboats, and even multihulls =
ranging from 23 to 53 feet. A series of tests were even conducted at =
night.=20
BoatU.S. Foundation staff were particularly interested in the =
powerboat tests, which had never been done before. Find out what we =
learned in Foundation Findings #41 in November's BoatU.S. Magazine.=20
Calling All Boaters - Your Input is Needed!
As part of Help Stop the Drops, a national clean fueling campaign =
to prevent drips and drops at the fuel dock, the BoatU.S. Foundation is =
asking for your opinions and experiences at the fuel dock. Over 3,000 =
boaters have responded to the survey so far, and your opinion will help =
further development of educational programs for recreational boaters and =
marinas nationwide. Tell us your top issues at the fuel dock-aside from =
the rising prices!
EPIRB Rental Saves Crews of Two Vessels Stricken in Gulf
The BoatU.S. Foundation EPIRB Rental Program, which rents $900 =
emergency beacons at a nominal weekly rate, proved its value when two =
sailboats activated the beacons and were rescued in May. The vessels =
were participating in the Regatta Del Sol race from St. Petersburg, FL, =
to Isla Mujeres, Mexico, and the stormy weather created problems for the =
boats. After trying numerous self-rescue methods, the sailors activated =
their EPIRB units, which allowed the Coast Guard to pinpoint their =
positions and evacuate the threatened racers. In each case, the EPIRB =
helped the Coast Guard deliver everyone to safety.
To make a reservation for a rental EPIRB, visit =
http://www.BoatUS.com/foundation/epirb
Reservations are accepted as early as six months before your trip.
Clean Water Grant Award Winner Chosen
The Lake Pend Orielle Idaho Club, recipient of a $2,000 BoatU.S. =
Foundation Clean Water grant for 2004, has been chosen for the =
Leadership in Clean Boating Outreach Award and given an additional $500 =
in prize money to expand their project.=20
This is the first year the Leadership Award has been given. =
Grantees from 2004 that finished their Clean Water Grant projects in one =
year's time were judged on professionalism of their product, efficient =
use of funds, and innovation.
The group, located in Sandpoint, ID, designed and published a =
full-color "Boater's Guide to Lake Pend Orielle" and has made it =
available free at local boating and sporting shops. The Boater's Guide =
includes a map of the lake, as well as tips for clean boating, such as =
engine maintenance and clean fueling practices. The guide also addresses =
aquatic nuisance species, which was the 2004 Clean Water Grant focus =
topic, by providing information to help prevent the spread of Eurasian =
milfoil, a non-native aquatic weed that threatens the native plant life =
of the lake.
The deadline for the next cycle of Clean Water Grants is February =
1, 2006. To learn more about Clean Water grants, please visit =
www.boatus.com/cleanwater/grants.
Life Jacket Design Contest-Deadline Approaching!=20
Consider this: In 2003 alone, drowning accounted for 70 percent of =
the boating fatalities, and of those, 86 percent were not wearing a life =
jacket. The U.S. Coast Guard has estimated that over 400 lives may have =
been saved if only the person was wearing his or her life jacket.=20
So why don't boaters adopt a simple habit that could save a life? =
A recent study by the Boat U.S. Foundation indicated that lack of =
comfort was the number one reason why life jackets are not worn in =
greater numbers. We want that to change.=20
The BoatU.S. Foundation and the Personal Flotation Device =
Manufacturers Association (PFDMA) are offering a $5,000 prize for the =
best new life jacket design. We want to see your idea of a comfortable, =
wearable flotation device unlike anything boaters have ever seen before. =
And your design does NOT have to meet current U.S. Coast Guard =
requirements.
If you are a creative thinker and have an idea for a new and =
innovative life jacket, your ingenuity may help save lives, so check out =
the guidelines for this contest. There's no cost to enter, and time is =
running out. Click here for more!
