My original July 14, 2007 letter to the squadron on the subject of “
Something to Think About” was somewhat out of date in that it only addressed the
member dues situation for the 2006-2007 dues year (1 June 2006 to 31 May 2007).
That was the practice when I first started working on this project a few
months ago. However, we are now into a new dues cycle and it would be more
appropriate to address the 1 June 2007 to 31 May 2008 dues year.

With some prompting from our membership chairman, Commander Bill Johnson,
and looking a Governing Board minutes I have brought things up to date. The
minutes of the USPS 2006 Fall Governing Board provides the insight into the new
“family” style dues structure.

Dues Related Motions Adopted at the USPS 2006 Fall Governing Board

That the dues for the primary active member total $33.60 (a $1.80 increase),
that the dues for each additional active member total $16.80 (a $.90
increase), and that the dues for each adult family member total $8.40 (a $.45
increase), effective in the spring of 2007 for the 2008 dues year. (2006-GB-21)

- and -

That the dues amount for primary active, sustaining and life members with
attached family or additional active members be set to the amount of the same
category without attached members plus 50 percent of the current dues amount
for regular active members. Further, that the dues amount for family and
additional active members be set to zero. (2006-GB-22)

These dues changes became effective with the 2007-2008 dues year.

The impact of the two motions on the annual dues for the Phoenix SPS members
can be summarized in the following table

1. An Active member with family members pays national dues of $50.40 no
matter how many family members are involved.
2. Additional Active members are $3.50 for district and $0.00 for squadron
dues.
3. Life members are assessed $25.00 voluntary squadron dues, except for a
Family membership the national dues are $16.80
4. For Adult and Junior Family members there are no additional dues for
squadron or district.
5. Apprentice and Apprentice Sea Scouts are not associated with any Active
Member family and pay national dues of $12.00. There are no squadron or
district dues.
6. Associate member dues are $10.00 at the squadron level only. Those
dues will be waived if the Associate member elects to receive the squadron

N/A These Associate member privileges are determined by their home squadron
membership category.

Each squadron member should now be able to use the two tables to determine
what their total dues were/are for 2007-2008 year and the member privileges
associated with each.
