FYI- Special Thanks to Alicia and Kriselle; you ladies did a fantastic
job!

On May 19, 2006, as part of the Safe Boating Day celebrations and at the
request of Phoenix I&E branch staff, Officer Alicia Jontz and Officer
Kriselle Colvin conducted voluntary Quagga Mussel Inspections of
watercraft launching their boats from the 10 lane boat ramp at Lake
Pleasant. During approximately 3.5 hours we contacted 102 watercraft
users (primarily operators- i.e. not including passengers) preparing to
launch 68 watercraft and 4 personal watercraft. Out of these contacts,
we discovered 2 watercraft that had been on a lake infected by Quagga
Mussels in the last 4-5 weeks. Both boats were checked extensively in
an attempt to determine if there was any possibility of lingering
mussels. Both boats appeared to be clean; however, one of the operators
admitted to having been to Saguaro Lake twice in March one week after a
day trip to Havasu.

Overall, it appeared that most people had at least heard about the
mussel issue. Channel 3, inspections at Lake Powell, and our website
being the most mentioned sources of information. However, many people
were unaware of how to decontaminate their boats after leaving infected
waters. We gave each boat owner a copy of the Quagga flyer. While 2 out
of 72 is a relatively low number, it only takes one.

Any questions let me know.
