Subject: [Phoenix] volunteers for Boating Safety Celebration

As of this point I have 13 volunteers of which 4 are?vessel inspectors. This is a?huge undertaking, and our first year we had 41 people volunteer.?What has happened to our enthusiam?? If you cannot be?out in the?elements, I?need people to work inside next Wednesday morning to help us stuff?the information bags to be handed out at the event. At the event there will be shade canopies to get us out?of the heat occasionally. We will be out of there by?0100 (1pm) on Saturday before the real heat starts! This event touched well over 140 boaters last year. Please give of your time and?help us make our lakes a safer place to?enjoy what we do best - Boating!

If you are interested in an RV Park I highly recommend the Chula Vista RV Resort at 460 Sandpiper Way in Chula Vista CA. Phone 619-422-0111. This park fills very rapidly, so do it now. Bill and I made reservations for ourselves and they had a few spots left at that time, but you need to hurry! This park is within walking distance of the Chula Vista Yachat Club where the meeting will be held. The park has an exercise room (free), a BBQ area, swimming pool and it is really clean and well policed. Weekends are popular for transients and reservations are essential. Summer weekend rates start at 55.50 + tax. Well worth it. Again - I can't stress enough - they go fast - reserve it now!
A few motels have been recommended. First is the Vagabond Inn Chula Vista. 230 Broadway (just off I-5). This was our Commander's first choice of motels.  Phone 800-522-1555. AMENITIES Free Continental Breakfast,Free Wireless Internet available in all rooms,rates I found on the internet started at $86.00 for a king bed room. 
The El Primero at 416 3rd Ave is more upscale with rates between $100.00 and $175.00 (also just off I-5) Phone 619-425-4486. AMENITIES complimentary gourmet breakfast, Wi-Fi internet access.
A smaller sort of mini motel which is clean with minimum amenities and small rooms would be the Riviera at 372 Broadway. Phone 619-422-1987 Rates start at $55.00 per night.
I hope this gives you a good selection to choose from. Don't wait! Make those reservations now! Let's show our new upcoming squadron the best of our attendance. Heck - let's set a new record for attendance!

Hi all
 
Ron had to have a heart valve repaired earlier this week. He had a long 8  
hour surgery. The valve was not something that was repairable after 6 long hours 
 of trying and finally replaced. 
 
Things are looking good today.
Ron may get to be put in his own room.
We start therapy today. Walking, sitting, getting up. I go through this  too. 
 He is anticipating to be better than new in 8 weeks.

The bags are all stuffed. 
All who can volunteer, please report to Connie at the 10 lane ramp on the County side of Lake Pleasant at 0730 (7:30 am) on this Saturday. (17 May) The 10 lane ramp is located off Carefree Highway past the Pleasant Harbor entrance (3 miles past that entrance) The road is clearly marked Lake Pleasant Park or Castle Creek Road. Follow this road to the 1st right turn or the Park entrance. Tell them at the entrance gate you are working the Boating Celebration and you should not have to pay to get in. Wearing a Squadron polo shirt is also a plus to people attending the event. That identifies our group. Shorts are probably the wear of choice as temperatures will be in the 90's. We will definately be out of there around noon to avoid the extreme heat. 
I will assign volunteers duties depending on number of volunteers and where best used at the moment. Please plan to be flexible. We will be setting up tables, pop up tents, assisting vessel inspectors with paperwork, handing out bags of information, handing out popsicles and water, assisting with a life vest exchange for vests the inspectors find are not compliant (torn, very worn)directing traffic, etc.. This list is subject to change as need arises! 
Bring your friendliest attitude and share that attitude with other boaters in attendance!

The June 25-29, 2008 Lake Powell boating event planning meeting Monday June
2, 2008 at 7:00 p.m.   We will have maps, books, information on the new
zebra mussel-free certification that is required and ideas about making this
a great boating adventure.  If some of the experienced boaters can join us
they can provide valuable information and colorful stories.

Please join us even if you do not plan on going this June to learn more
about Powell and to share your experiences.
