Giving the Gift of Safety
Safety
<http://www.uscgboating.org/waypoints/images/dec07/Article%201_3_sm.jpg>
What great things are you doing to promote safety to your boating community
this holiday season? Even in December there's still time to take action on a
raft of promotional ideas, from pitching feature articles to weekly
newspapers to quick creative flyers that you can hand out at local holiday
events.
And here's the best part. When boaters tear open the wrapping paper to find
such items as life jackets, fire extinguishers, etc., it encourages them to
start thinking "safety" long before many of them even have their boats on
the water.

Programming Marine Radio and AIS Equipment
Radio
<http://www.uscgboating.org/waypoints/images/dec07/Article%202_1_sm.jpg>
Statistics show that many mariners in distress do not properly identify
themselves nor provide a precise location when radioing for help, which
delays rescue services in arriving at the scene quickly and providing the
assistance needed. Many marine communication devices, including marine
radios equipped with Digital Selective Calling (DSC) and Automatic
Identification Systems (AIS) equipment rely upon a 9-digit Maritime Mobile
Service Identity (MMSI) number to identify itself and more importantly the
user of the device.

Auxiliary Presents a Primer on Auto-Inflatable Life Jackets
PFD <http://www.uscgboating.org/waypoints/images/dec07/Article%203_2.jpg>
Inflatable life jackets cost more than the Type III life jackets most
boaters wear, but if you spend a considerable amount of time wearing one
you'll be amazed how the trade-off in comfort more than offsets the cost
factor. They are user-friendly and make boating in hot/humid weather more
enjoyable; they can also alleviate operator fatigue.
While most inflatable life jacket wearers know the bobbin should be
installed, and a full CO2 cylinder screwed in, many are not aware of other
preventative maintenance requirements. As much as I've promoted new style
life jackets for the past several years, I'm embarrassed to admit I didn't
read my life jackets inner label until the subject of properly maintaining
inflatable life jackets arose. I was aware of the basic maintenance
requirement, but research revealed some surprises worth sharing.

Nautical Terms of The Month
<http://www.uscgboating.org/waypoints/images/spacer.gif>
Taken Aback in today's language means surprised and disconcerted, but
nautically it means when a vessel's sails are suddenly or unexpectedly
filled by the wind in such a way as to press them aft.
Remember Harry Belafonte singing about the "Tallyman" in the song Day-O?
Nautically speaking a Tallyman is a person assigned to a merchant ship by
the ship's agent to record both the loading and off-loading of cargo.

Harrowing Bering Sea Rescue Underscores Danger of Hypothermia
Winterizing
<http://www.uscgboating.org/waypoints/images/dec07/Article%204_2_sm.jpg> The
Bering Sea is perhaps one of the most unforgiving, harsh, and dangerous
places in the world, but although the risk is high, many mariners depend on
it for their livelihood. In the dark winter months, when things can quickly
go from bad to worse, they rely on the Coast Guard to be there. For one
Coast Guardsman, taking lifesaving action in the midst of a brutal winter
storm, earned him a prestigious award and public recognition for heroic
achievement. The award recounts his actions as an individual, but the
rescue, like so many others, displays the elements inherent in all Coast
Guardsmen willing to put their lives on the line so others may live.
